SUMMARY OF POSITION

Under the direction of the Nursing Manager, and as part of a team-based health care delivery model, assists in the provision of direct patient care by performing routine patient care procedures and technical/clerical support services. Ensures efficient patient flow throughout the clinic, maintains neat, clean, and safe patient care areas, and promotes patient satisfaction through professional and respectful communications. Works in coordination with health care teams to provide patient care that follows the Patient-Centered Medical Home model.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESULTS

Provision of Direct Services

Assists in the delivery of competent, accurate, medical care and treatment to all patients by performing medical assistant duties including but not limited to:

  • Assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a registered nurse and/or medical provider.
  • Prepares examination rooms (i.e.: stocks medical supplies, disposes of sharps containers and biohazard items, arranges exam room according to provider preferences, etc.) before and after each patient visit. Prepares equipment and supplies needed by the provider for each patient encounter.
  • Assists with patient processing, under direction of clinic nurse or provider, escorts patients to exam rooms in order of immediate attention and appointment times.
  • Interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e.: pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and accurately records information on patients' charts and records.
  • Conducts vision screens, ear irrigations, finger sticks, phlebotomy, hearing screens, asthma nebulizer treatments, or other clinic approved procedures.
  • Draws blood samples from patients; prepares samples and other specimens for laboratory analysis with appropriate requisitions.
  • Reviews medication names and doses to patients as prescribed by providers.
  • Collaborates with other clinics and providers to obtain immunization records. Interprets patient immunization records and recommends updated vaccinations as needed. Stays current with new vaccination information and schedules. Must retrieve and enter immunization data from State immunization registry after required training/sign on.
  • Communicates clearly with patients, directly and/or over the telephone regarding medications, dosage, education and counseling including asthma and obesity management, follow-up instructions, lab results per physician direction.
  • Ensures Vibrant Health's compliance with clinic policies, OSHA, CLIA, state and federal laws, and HIPAA regulations by:
  1. Complying with the protection and disposal of biohazards.
  2. Adhering to and promoting professional, ethical and legal standards of practice.
  3. Maintaining confidentiality of all organization information, consumer nonpublic personal information (NPI) and personal health information (PHI), as well as records directly or indirectly identifying any person currently or formerly receiving services from Wyandotte Community Health Center.
  • Carries out Wyandotte Community Health Center's mission: To provide access to respectful, empowering, culturally sensitive and appropriate high quality health care for the community, regardless of socio-economic obstacles.
  • Accepts and uses supervision, direction and consultation to maximize available resources in the completion of work duties.
  • Additional responsibilities will be assigned as needed to maintain and improve effective functioning of the department and to advance the mission of the organization.
  • All job responsibilities will be carried out under the direction of the organization's policies and procedures.

Provision of Technical/Clerical Support Services

  • Prepares and maintains accurate, updated, and thorough medical records for providers.
  • Completes necessary paperwork for (school) physicals (i.e.: growth charts).
  • Assists with organizing the pharmacy including disposal of expired medications and inventorying supplies. Works with the Medical Director and/or Nursing Manager to order supplies, as requested.
  • Assists in the training of other medical assistants, and nursing students (if applicable), to clinic policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Assists with maintaining equipment and calibrating lab equipment per manufacturer requirements.
  • Assists with monitoring various logs for compliance.
  • As directed, assists Medical Office Assistants with front desk duties and the Reach out and Read program, as needed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Graduate of an approved Medical Assistant Certification program, with current Medical Assistant certification required. Six months prior, relevant working experience preferred. CPR certification required. Must possess knowledge of standard concepts, practices and procedures of medical assisting including phlebotomy experience, ability to collect samples (e.g. blood, throat cultures, etc.), take vital signs, and to perform limited tests. Must demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the Medical Director, an ability to perform injections, instrumentation or lab procedures as directed. Working knowledge of personal computers and Microsoft Office Suite (Word & Excel) required.

  7. Travel to all parts of the facility and throughout the community.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Associate's Degree in Applied Science preferred. Bilingual fluency in written and oral English/Spanish preferred. Experience with electronic health records preferred. Prior experience working in a Pediatric health care environment.

  • Employment is contingent upon successful clearance from Criminal, Kansas and Missouri Child/Elder Abuse and Neglect, Sex Offender background investigations, TB testing, pre-employment drug testing, and verification of Hepatitis-B immunization.
  • Occasional evening and weekend availability is required.
