DUTIES: Under indirect and intermittent supervision, working mostly on a rotating shift, but at times on a regular day-shift assignment, and regularly working alone, to patrol, repair and restore service or report the nature of trouble found on overhead, or, as required, on underground circuits; to inspect and operate automatic substation equipment; incidental thereto to drive a Company automobile equipped with tools and materials; to make residential, commercial or industrial trouble calls, and handle customer service repairs and adjustments as found necessary to restore service; and to perform similar and less skilled work as required. In this connection to perform details of work, such as: Clear and put up fallen wires. Respond to "light out" and "power off" customer calls. Locate trouble and restore service or inform Distribution or District Dispatcher as to needs. Test circuits and equipment for open, ground, or short circuit, and clear if possible. Inspect, repair, re-install or string services, clear tree limbs, or replace brackets. Replace blown line, transformer, or substations fuses. Patrol and repair street lighting, alley circuits, or feeders. Inspect, report, and clear emergency substation trouble. Check substation operation, read meters and change ammeter or volt-meter charts. Check operation of relays and breakers in substations and reset relays. Perform routine or emergency switching on overhead or underground circuits of all voltages, or clear circuits, as directed by Distribution or District Dispatcher. Phase out and established phase rotation on overhead and underground circuits. Respond to fire alarms, clearing Company wires or customers' circuits. Install and remove grounds and protective equipment on poles or in substations. Investigate and extinguish fires on poles or in manholes. Investigate and report in detail, Company accidents involving personal injury or property damage. Investigate current thefts and answer jury summonses on cases relating thereto. Changed burned out transformers in special cases with the aid of other Troublemen. Make load tests on transformers. Install or read watt-hour and maximum demand meters. Wind, set or change time clocks, and read check meters on poles. Write requisitions and reports on all work done. In some geographical groups perform blocking and releasing of regulators, and switching operations in Company distribution and transmission substations, turn off or turn on gas service. Operate inhalator in accident cases.

SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: For quick response to customers' calls and for locating trouble and restoring service as quickly as possible. For careful use and custody of trouble car, stock of tools, materials. For properly accounting for small amounts of money collected on non-pay orders. For observing safety rules and traffic laws to insure public safety while on streets, highways, and customer premises. For making prompt decisions on own initiative. For exercising care in clearing or guarding fallen high voltage wires, to insure public safety. For holding as confidential information concerning accident investigations, current diversions, or non-pay orders.

CONTACTS: With customers, in connection with carrying out assignments. With Overhead and Underground Foremen while performing switching operations to clear circuits.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed to outside weather conditions. Must dress to work in or outside. Regularly scheduled or frequently called upon to work at night under inadequate artificial light, and at times in rain, sleet or snow. Subject to work in emergency during any period of the twenty-four hour cycle. Subject to cramped or crowded work positions, and at times slippery or uneven footing. Must work alone.

HAZARDS: Subject to hazard of falls or shocks, flashes, or burns while working alone on poles. Subject to the hazards of street and highway traffic, dog bites and falls on customers' premises.

QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or the equivalent. One year of experience as a Lineman or successful completion of the Apprentice Line Troubleman Training program. Thorough knowledge of overhead line construction and standard practices. Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL. Be adept in artificial respiration. Be alert, neat in appearance, resourceful, agile, quick-acting, able-bodied.
