Summary

The Radiation Protection Intern is a temporary role providing broad work experience in performing a variety of radiation protection (RP) tasks of limited scope and complexity.The intern will rotate through various work assignments, especially during outages. Under the guidance of supervision and their assigned mentors, interns will develop job skills and will learn about the duties and responsibilities of various RP tasks in order to help them make career decisions. They will complete training on industry-related topics. Interns will complete designated Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) courses including the Junior Fundamentals exam (RPFUN1) and will complete designated RP Standardized Task Evaluations (STE) within the first three months. The Palo Verde RP Intern Program is a nine-month program from March through November.

Minimum Requirements

High School graduate or GED.At least 18 years of age.Current Arizona resident.Must be able to satisfy applicable NRC, security, physical and psychological requirements to work within the protected area.

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications:

Basic math and high school algebra skills.

Good communications and interpersonal skills.

Nuclear requirement:

Any PVGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member.Any PVGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage.This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities. These are conditions of employment at PVGS.

Major Accountabilities

1) Embraces the Palo Verde safety culture, including:using Prevent Events tools, participating in pre-job briefings, reporting unsafe conditions, using personal protective equipment (PPE), avoiding injury, avoiding contamination, observing "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA) strategies and demonstrating safety awareness.

2) Sets high goals and seeks out opportunities to achieve results, including: maintaining a positive attitude, using self-checking, demonstrating professionalism, avoiding security violations, observing the "Do It Right The First Time" philosophy, using the right tools for the job and demonstrating skill and ability with hand tools.

3) Works effectively with the team and other work groups, including: working positively with others to achieve common goals, working together to ensure safety and quality and demonstrating a positive attitude while working with others.

4) Maintains effectiveness in varying environments with different tasks, responsibilities and people, including: working well with others, participating actively in training, providing feedback, attending as scheduled, maintaining a positive attitude, adapting to changing expectations of various departments and responding positively to unexpected changes.

5) Expresses ideas clearly and effectively, including: having a questioning attitude, using the phonetic alphabet in communications when required, using three-legged communications when required, and maintaining open lines of communications with mentors.

6) Demonstrates keen desire to learn and understand, including: arriving on time to assigned duties, having a questioning attitude, and demonstrating willingness to listen and take direction.
