Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) Manager, this position is responsible for providing administrative and technical expertise in the development, installation, and ongoing maintenance of information systems, instrumentation, and other software platforms used in the Clinical Lab, Pathology and Genomics Services departments and their satellite sites throughout the institution. They will identify and define departmental and system requirements, problems, and issues; evaluate and determine methods and means for resolution; implement changes; and advise end-users of solutions and any procedural modifications. They will need to be sensitive to cost-effectiveness and user requirements as well as the overall objectives of the department, UCSF, and Medical Center IT. This position will interact with faculty, staff, Medical Center IT personnel, external departments, and outside vendors and consultants. They will work independently on small to medium problems and projects.

This position is responsible for working with clients at multiple UCSF Health campuses including but not limited to Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Mission Center, Mission Bay, BCH-Oakland, VAMC, China Basin, and SFGH. Therefore, the incumbent will need to travel between these sites.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $101,300 - $151,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Clinical Systems is responsible for all aspects of the Electronic Health Record (APeX) and other clinical and infrastructure applications for UCSF Health hospitals, practices, affiliates and community partners.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and / or equivalent experience/training.
  • 4-8 years of professional experience in a technical setting, with information systems expertise including analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • Expertise in one or more programming languages, DBMS, and operating systems
  • Expertise with PC workstations, including desktop operating systems such as WIN
  • Advanced skills associated with programming design, modification, and implementation. Basic knowledge of secure software development. Demonstrated ability to create software specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Understanding of and experience troubleshooting client, server and peripherals-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Experience in incident response and digital forensics, including data collection, examination and analysis.
  • Solid working knowledge of networking and experience with HL7 interface protocols.
  • Familiarity with logical data design and data mapping or data conversion.
  • Advanced knowledge of computer security tools, best practices, and policies, including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Demonstrated skill at administering moderately complex security controls and configurations to computer hardware, software, and networks.
  • Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
  • Familiarity with data quality and governance issues and requirements.
  • Broad knowledge of various areas of IT.
  • Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of how system management actions affect other systems, system users, and dependent/related functions.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to work with both technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Ability to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Thorough knowledge of business and process analysis functions. Knowledge of the design, development and application of technology and systems to meet business needs.
  • Demonstrated experience with database administration. Working knowledge of database management systems and standards. Knowledge relating to database system design. Advanced database querying and modeling skills working with moderately complex databases.
