First Merchants Bank is seeking an Operational Risk Officer - Process and Loss to join our team! This position will provide support and leadership to build a strong operational risk management culture across the enterprise by facilitating the achievement of operational risk objectives and strategies throughout the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Provide direction and support to all areas of the bank in the oversight and rating of operational risk, including the discernment of rating appropriateness, interpretation of process requirements and their relevant risk, guidance in the documentation and reporting of initiatives that may engender operational risk, and review and challenge of process changes.
  • Participate in incident response and provide guidance on incident and event reporting for operational risk and loss events companywide. This includes analyzing forensic evidence details, offering evaluation and intellectual guidance for solution proposals, and providing operational risk specific insight on process considerations and efficacy of control layers and loss mitigation.
  • Direct and manage operational loss event recording for the organization through the use of documentation and the governance system tools which include ensuring proper recording of loss events, proposing design solutions and advancement to the methodology; discerning issues and recommending and pursuing enhancements; determining design approaches, planning a path for improvement, and implementing solutions in loss event management.
  • Assess requirements for requested process improvements with the intent to reduce risk utilizing outside resource input, interviews, and an understanding of product and regulatory constraints. Participate in relevant product and process working groups to contribute to guiding decisions related to operational risk as impacted by process and other change proposals.
  • Partner with the multiple bank departments to analyze and interpret Key Risk Indicators (KRI) ensuring a clear understanding and business line engagement with metrics, appropriate transparency, and deduction of historical data for trend identification, and responses based on defined KRI criteria. Communicate with the line of business partners on operational risk trends and provide operational risk perspective and expertise for proposed actions using learned standard operational risk methodologies and protocols.
  • Participate in operational and company-wide projects as needed to understand project risk, collaborating with involved departments to facilitate a risk review and implementation of risk mitigation efforts.


In order to be successful in this position, we require the following:



  • Bachelor's degree in business or related field.
  • A minimum of three (3) years in a risk management environment.


The following would be a plus:



  • Three (3) to five (5) years of operations, IT, or report analysis experience
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task between multiple projects
  • Strong presentational skills and ability to independently direct and conduct meetings
