The USC Department of Ophthalmology is seeking a Research Lab Technician III. The ideal candidate will have experience in high resolution light and confocal microscopy, image analysis, image processing, and general biochemical (protein-based), molecular biology laboratory techniques, drug formulation as well as use and maintenance of appropriate laboratory instrumentation to conduct such experiments. The candidate must have a Bachelor's Degree in a scientific field and 3-4 years of relevant experience, which may include a Master's Degree or equivalent experience working in basic research. The candidate should be able to work independently, as well as assist multiple research faculty and staff. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, responsible, service-oriented, and have excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills.

Job Summary:

  • Provide expertise in training and assisted imaging using confocal and fluorescence microscopes and slide scanners for imaging of live and fixed cells.
  • Provide expert consultation and recommendation for use of available imaging equipment.
  • Provide expertise in training and assisted experimentation utilizing basic biochemical and molecular techniques including gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, isolation and characterization of proteins and nucleic acids, HPLC, and PCR
  • Develop protocols for instrumentation use and templates for specific applications.
  • Coordinate processing of user histology samples through shared technician
  • Develop and implement procedures for training.
  • Assist and coordinate use of various off-site research instrumentation by multiple investigators.
  • Organize information sessions for research faculty and staff to learn about different instrumentations and services.

Job Accountabilities include:

  • Plans and conducts research experiments in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols. Independently performs non-routine and complex research laboratory procedures and techniques.
  • Maintains accurate records of procedures used to conduct experiments. Provides analyses and interpretations of results for review by supervisor. May contribute to the writing of technical papers.
  • Selects, modifies or adapts equipment and procedures to specific research needs.
  • Operates and maintains sophisticated laboratory and scientific equipment. Troubleshoots equipment problems and performs standard repairs.
  • Controls equipment and supplies inventory. Recommends purchase, locates, negotiates prices, and orders equipment and supplies for funded research, proposals, graduate research and student labs. Maintains vendor contacts and backup purchase documentation files for reference or reporting, as needed.
  • Prepares chemical solutions for experimental use.
  • Researches, compiles and evaluates background information to enhance planning and design of experiments. Stays current in field of research to contribute to research planning and design activities and equipment planning.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred Education: Master's Degree

Preferred Experience: 6 Years

Preferred Field of Expertise: Master's Degree or advanced technical schooling combined with 1-2 years of directly related laboratory experience to provide advanced knowledge of research procedures, equipment and analysis methods. Expertise in cell or molecular biology, biochemistry, and optical imaging.

"The hourly rate range for this position is $31.44 - $40.11.
