Ward Pediatric Intensive Care Unit The Adelaide C. Ward Pediatric Intensive Care Unit achieved the Silver-Level Beacon Award for Excellence in May 2016 from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. This 3-year designation recognizes significant milestones along a unit's journey. The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a forty-one bed acute care setting for medical or surgical patients The medical PICU APN will work as part of a team to provide coverage to high acuity pediatric ICU patients following acute respiratory failure, acute kidney injury, bone marrow transplant, kidney transplant, septic shock, burn injury and trauma, among other diagnoses. In this team structure, they will provide direct patient management which includes participating in patient care rounds, ordering/interpreting lab tests, analyzing and prioritizing complex data, developing differential diagnosis and implementing plans of care. These tasks will be done in direct collaboration with a board-certified pediatric intensivist. The APN will be expected to work effectively with the medical team by communicating clearly with families, working well with physicians and physician trainees, being a resource for nursing staff and collaborating with multiple subspecialties that function in the medical PICU. The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse I (APRN-I) provides comprehensive, evidence-based advanced practice nursing to address the physiologic, psychosocial, and developmental needs of patients and families within the framework of the collaborative practice agreement. The APRN-I participates in beginning leadership, evidenced-based practice/ research, and organizational development activities with the support and direction of an experienced APRN mentor.
