Job Summary:

The Military Family Life Counselor (MFLC) shall provide in person, confidential non-medical counseling service to military service members and their families. The MFLC program concentrates on the psychological and behavioral health of military service. The position requires licensed professional counselors to provide support, solutions, resources and relief.

Primary Functions/Work Responsibilities:

Provide general MFLC counseling support which assists service members and their families with issues including, but not limited to the following:



  • Relationship issues (Workplace, marital, significant other, family, child, friend)
  • Communication skills
  • Mobilization, deployment, reunion adjustments, frequent relocations, relocation adjustment
  • Serious illness and loss and grief
  • Conflict resolution, anxiety and stress, anger management
  • Self-esteem/independence, decision making
  • Assertiveness
  • Work life balance
  • Caregiver peer to peer forums
  • Relationship issues, homesickness
  • Organize and facilitate voluntary peer-to-peer forums as requested
  • Schedule meetings with installation POCs and Recovery Care Coordinators, on site, as applicable, coordinating logistics, maintaining knowledge of caregiver issues and challenges, and facilitating issue discussions


Required Knowledge, Skills and Ability:Knowledge:



  • Working knowledge of military, state, federal and local resources
  • Understanding of military lifestyle
  • Familiar with evolving issues that affect military members and their families
  • Skills:
  • Excellent skills in written and verbal communication and assessment
  • Detailed oriented with attention to accuracy and thoroughness
  • Strong organizational, and decision-making skills
  • Work independently to develop, implement and evaluate safety and intervention plans


Ability:



  • Ability to demonstrate counseling competence preceding employment with the MFLC program
  • Ability to develop trusting helping relationships
  • Ability to work effectively with families and individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Ability to intervene in crisis situations, using sound expert judgement, common sense, and ethical practice
  • Ability to work supportively with military and civilian medical, law enforcement, social service, and legal personnel on behalf of service members and their families.


Essential Job Requirements:



  • Government Clearance NACI, CNACI and IRC
  • Master's degree from an accredited graduate program in a mental health related field such as social work, psychology, marriage/family therapy, or counseling
  • Must undergo and pass a minimum background investigation (MBI)
  • Must meet the United States Military Departments Residency Requirements
  • A valid unrestricted counseling license/certification from the State of Illinois that grants authority to providing counseling service as an independent practitioner in the respective fields (LCPC, LCSW, LMFT)
  • Work a minimum of 40 hours in a work week
  • Be a citizen/ national of the United States of America
