Job Summary

Writes or edits a variety of comprehensive and difficult material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis. Researches, selects sources for and conducts interviews, and ensures accuracy of written pieces. Recommends content and layout, edits, and coordinates production of a variety of printed and online material, or conversion of printed pieces to online formats and archives.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $67,000 - $143,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Diabetes Center is a comprehensive research and treatment facility with a broad focus on clinical care, education and both basic and clinical research. The Center maintains a multidisciplinary and highly collaborative environment that brings together expertise from the UCSF Departments of Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Microbiology & Immunology and others.

In addition, The Immune Tolerance Network (ITN) is a National Institutes of Health-funded research network created to facilitate the advancement of immune tolerance-inducing initiatives in human clinical practice, towards the development of new and improved treatment and monitoring protocols in its areas of disease focus. With over $30 million dollars in funding per year, the ITN is responsible for the selection, design and key aspects of the implementation of mechanistic, laboratory-based studies and clinical trials examining many of the most advanced experimental drugs and biologics in development today. All aspects of the ITN mission are carried out in collaboration with academic investigators responsible for bringing trial concepts to the ITN, and with medical, regulatory and operational staff at the ITN's sponsor and primary funding agency, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health.

The purpose of this position is to provide excellent and independent scientific writing to support the growing needs of the Center in submitting collaborative and center grants.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 3+ years of related experience
  • Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation.
  • Thorough skills to write clear, lively, engaging and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate to target audiences and / or the broader public, while ensuring adherence to the location's message.
  • Thorough knowledge of the location, including its mission, goals, achievements, infrastructure, programs, and policies.
  • Thorough knowledge of issues in higher education, a specialized academic discipline or field and / or health sciences.
  • Thorough interpersonal communications skills, including active listening and effective collaboration skills.
  • Thorough analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Thorough attention to detail, project management and organizational skills.
  • Skill to maintain confidentiality.
  • Significant training/experience in the field of diabetes and obesity research
  • Thorough understanding of NIH grants submission and review process

Preferred Qualifications


  • PhD in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate editorial style and publication guidelines.
  • Knowledge of computer applications for publishing, image handling, and / or web production.
