Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is STEP 1: $32.41 - STEP: 18: $45.38. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University expects to pay for this position is STEP 1: $32.41.

Job Closing Date

This position is approved for a "Hybrid" work modality. Department expectations are for the new hire to work on-campus during onboarding/training/acclimation with eventual remote days of up to 2 per week.

About the Job

Reporting to the Head of Collection Services, the Technical Services Coordinator is responsible for managing and coordinating technical services operations, including acquisitions, cataloging, and physical processing of print and media. The Coordinator is also responsible for maintaining the accuracy of library holdings in online catalogs and working with publishers and vendors to ensure the receipt of ordered materials.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages and directs technical services unit with multiple functions and boundary-crossing responsibilities; acts as liaison with library administration, librarians, or other library staff members in establishing appropriate policies and procedures for the management of technical services operations; creates documentation of procedures and functions, setting goals and priorities for area of responsibility; provides statistical reports to library administration.
  • Utilizes specialized technical expertise to resolve complex technical problems related to bibliographic records in all formats and Western European languages; performs complex headings work in OCLC systems; responds to bibliographic maintenance requests and reports of Primo display issues; maintains the accuracy of library holdings in Primo; performs original cataloging of physical materials as required; imports bibliographic records from OCLC or other sources; edits records according to established guidelines.
  • Manages daily technical processing activities in accordance with library policies; hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates student employees; maintains inventories of supplies; supervises student employees performing ongoing physical processing tasks, including affixing security/inventory devices, spine labels, and property stamps to print resources and other library materials in various formats; performs repairs to library materials as required; supervises student employees receiving physical library materials from vendors; resolves problems relating to damage or discrepancies using independent judgment.
  • Orders physical library materials from publishers or vendors as directed. Works with publishers and vendors to ensure receipt of ordered materials; verifies correct prices, discounts, tax, and shipping charges.
  • Serves on campus and UC Libraries systemwide committees and groups as assigned; performs other duties as assigned or that may be required to assist in the smooth running of the library.
Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university. (Required)
  • Five years of directly related, progressively responsible experience, or a combination of education/training/experience. (Required)

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Advanced professional knowledge enabling the performance of a full range of coordinating, and/or highly specialized functional subject area activities. This knowledge may be acquired through considerable library experience, possibly in combination with specialized training and skills or relevant academic preparation.
  • Experience in using an integrated library system, preferably Ex Libris Alma, and OCLC services such as Connexion and OCLC Batchload Services.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Resource Description and Access, Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2), MARC 21 formats, Library of Congress Classification Schedules, Library of Congress Subject Headings and OCLC documentation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including use of proper grammar and standard business forms.
  • Exemplifies excellent customer service skills and interacts effectively with others in a library setting.
  • Excellent organizational skills, supervision of students, ability to prioritize work and complete assignments independently as well as work in a team environment.
  • Cross-platform computer programs including MS Word, Excel and email.
  • Information search and retrieval using library online systems, scholarly databases and the Internet.
