Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Histology Technologist - Research.

The Histotechnologist works closely with senior laboratory personnel to coordinate histologic processing of human tissues. Technologists utilize standard operating procedures that ensure accurate and reproducible histologic assay/testing that includes sample processing, microtomy, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and imaging modalities. Candidate should be proficient with chromogenic and fluorescent manual and automated (Ventana preffered) immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization mono- and multiplex techniques with a strong ability to troubleshoot. The candidate should have excellent interpersonal communication skills both through technology and in person in addition to oral and written communication skills. Excellent analytical skills are required to evaluate the importance and urgency of problems plus the ability to solve non-routine issues. Strong organizational skills, as well as patience and steady commitment toward achievement of goals and the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced setting is essential to this position.

Job Responsibilities:

    • Ensure proper and accurate receipt, labeling, accessioning and tracking of tissue samples
    • Perform tissue processing, embedding, microtomy for all tissue-based sampling modalities (FFPE & Frozen)
    • Construct various types of Tissue Microarrays
    • Perform manual and automated routine (H&E) and specific histochemical stains
    • Perform manual and automated immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization including optimization and validation.
    • Perform Whole Slide Imaging
    • Ensure accurate and proper documentation of tracking and distribution of all tissue samples thru laboratory databases (ARCOS, iLAB, LIMS, ACCESS, ESM)
    • Perform routine maintenance and quality assurance of all instruments and procedures as well as analyze and troubleshoot instrument related issues
    • Performs all responsibilities in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures, CAP accreditation, established guidelines, work instructions, using appropriate industry and Good Clinical Practices standards.
    • Develop and write new standard operating procedures according to CAP accreditation requirements.
    • Ensure that day-to-day assigned tasks are consistently and accurately completed and perform other related duties as assigned.

    • Maintain confidentiality of all research information
    • Excels in cooperation, collaboration and communication with clients and all NYULH employees
    • Maintain a professional working relationship with all staff and clients
    • Communicate ideas, problems, and suggestions in a timely and effective manner

Judgement/decision-making:

    • Can recognize problems as they occur, and through the application of appropriate policy/procedure, determine and/or recommends the appropriate solution. Must be able to troubleshoot.
    • Seeks guidance as necessary for the performance of duties; asks appropriate questions when in doubt and utilizes reference sources/materials to ensure accuracy.
    • Advises appropriate personnel of situations/problems requiring intervention or follow-up attention.
    • Excellent organizational skills that facilitate making timely decisions that keep the organization moving forward
    • Committed and eager to take on new opportunities and tough challenges with a sense of urgency, high energy and enthusiasm

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Laboratory Medicine or related Life Science discipline with 3-5 years of histology experience and ASCP BOC HT certification. HTL eligible candidates can apply but must pass BOC HT or HTL exam within two years of service..

Required Licenses: Histotechnologist, Certified Histotechnician

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science Degree in Laboratory Medicine (Histotechnology preferred) with ASCP BOC HT or HTL certification, ASCP Qualification in Immunohistochemistry and NYS license. At least five years of clinical or research histology laboratory experience.
Preferred Competencies:
Excellent interpersonal communication both through technology and in person. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills. Good analytical skills to evaluate the importance and urgency of problems, ability to solve non-routine issues. Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced setting. Strong organizational skills, as well as patience and steady commitment toward achievement of goals.

Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $67,771.14 - 112,951.35 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
