Job Description

The UMSL Department of Music seeks a world-class musician who will serve as the second violinist of the Arianna String Quartet (ASQ) in their national and international teaching and creative scholarly activities.
Additionally, the successful candidate will be a full-time instructor within the department and participate in efforts to reshape our curriculum in a way that reflects contemporary trends in music education.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Full-time member of the Arianna String Quartet:
    As the second violinist in the Arianna String Quartet, the candidate will enhance the quartet's performance capabilities and maintain its high standard of excellence and dedication to UMSL's goals of community involvement. Their participation and added leadership will contribute to the quartet's ongoing local, regional, national and international presence, helping to further elevate UMSL's reputation in the global music community.
  • Tenure-Track Professor:
    The candidate will teach violin and chamber music, as well as perform with the UMSL Orchestra as the orchestra rebuilds post-Covid. The candidate will have expertise and experience in areas beyond teaching violin. Areas of interest and expertise that would best serve the music department may include Music History, Electronic Music, Composition, Commercial Music, Improvisation, or in the creation of other courses that would enrich our curriculum.
  • Recruitment and Service:
    We seek a candidate who will bring fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to existing and new recruitment activities.

Rank & Salary:
Assistant Professor, full-time, tenure track, salary commensurate with experience.

Appointment:
Nine-month academic appointment in the Department of Music, College of Arts and Sciences.
Appointment to commence August 15, 2025

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate (or ABD) preferred in Violin Performance, Violin Pedagogy, or related discipline
  • Demonstrated professional concert experience as a soloist and chamber musician
  • Demonstrated record of teaching excellence

Preferred qualifications:

  • Collegiate teaching experience
  • Experience supporting the success of students from a wide variety of diverse backgrounds.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit one or two brief teaching videos (lesson, coaching, and/or classroom), and to participate in an interview via video conference in early December.
Teaching videos do not need to be submitted at this point.
Finalists will be invited for a campus visit.
