DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The University of California Observatories (UCO) is a Multi-Campus Research Unit (MRU) funded via the University of California Office of the President, Office of Research and headquartered on the UC Santa Cruz campus. UCO operates on behalf of astronomers, researchers, postdoctoral scholars, graduate and undergraduate students across the UC system who are engaged in research, education and training in optical and infrared astronomy. In addition to managing the technical, physical plant and public outreach operations of the Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton, California, UCO provides the scientific and administrative liaison to the shared Keck Observatory on Maunakea, Hawai'i and the international collaboration for the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) Project. UCO comprises extensive scientific and technical staff and facilities at UC Santa Cruz and Lick Observatory as well as administrative and business services. The Lick Observatory telescopes are scheduled 363 days per year, weather permitting. Additionally, Lick hosts about 30,000 members of the public via its summer programs and casual visitors.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Lick Observatory Facilities Supervisor, the incumbent takes measurements, records data and performs various other support tasks concerning the operation of the Lick Observatory Community Water Treatment System.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $22.58 / Hourly.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

100% - Water Treatment System Monitor

  • Take periodic measurements and record water system operation data. Transfer data acquired by others. Take measurements of residual chlorine at various points in the system, pH, temperature, flow rate, filter pressures, water levels in storage tanks, turbidity, quantities of treated water pumped into storage tanks, residual chlorine of treated water before entering the distribution system.
  • Assist in performing weekly verification of turbidimeters. Calibrate turbidimeters independently if necessary.
  • Turn on pump and put the water system online when necessary. Change filters when needed and put water system back online. Properly shut the system down when tanks are full or whenever necessary.
  • Collect various water samples as needed. Properly label water samples and fill out laboratory paperwork.
  • Maintain accurate computerized and manual records of the measurements using word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Assist Water System Operator with various reports required by CDPH (California Department of Public Health) and USEPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency).
  • In the event measurements are outside stipulated ranges, alert Water System Operator. If necessary, take repeated measurements to ensure the proper levels are restored. Incumbent must learn the legal limits of each parameter for the water system as required by California Department of Public Health and must be able to discern when an operator needs to be notified to prevent a violation.
  • Record daily weather observations.
  • Read various publications to remain aware of trends in the water treatment and testing processes.
  • Use a University vehicle to transport samples from the springs to the lab, and to drive to the water room on site.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to take water samples precisely and with proper safeguards against contamination.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to use and make mathematic calibrations of water testing instruments.
  • Ability to read gauges and specialized instruments.
  • Record keeping skills, including the ability to enter data into computerized and manual records.
  • Ability to operate a computer using Windows Operating System.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office with the ability to learn the data acquisition software.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
  • Interviewees will be required to provide a current DMV record.
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass the State Office of Drinking Water T1 Water Treatment Operator Certification within one year of employment. Cost of study materials and exam fees will be paid by UCO.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
