The Salvation Army Midland Division Family Haven Shelter is looking for a Residential Youth Coordinator. This individual will be responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing programs specifically designed to meet the needs of youth residents at the Family Haven shelter. They serve as the school liaison, facilitating educational continuity and support for school-aged children residing in our shelter program. This position oversees the Family Center, administering programming that enhances successful outcomes and the well-being of children facing housing instability. - Ensure Educational Access for School-aged children residing in shelter
- Coordinate enrollment and school placement processes for children entering and exiting the shelter, working closely with school administrators, counselors, and district liaisons.
- Ensure that all school-aged youth admitted into the Family Haven programs are enrolled in school within 48 hours of admission with necessary transportation services in place.
- Serve as the primary point of contact between the shelter program and local schools, specified school districts, and educational agencies.
- Facilitate communication between shelter staff, parents or guardians, and school personnel to support academic progress and address any challenges or concerns.
- Stay informed about local educational policies, programs, and initiatives that may impact children in the shelter program.
- Family Center Oversight
- Manage the Family Haven's Family Center by implementing scheduling to address homework time, computer time, games, and other youth interactions.
- Responsible for opening and closing the Family Center daily, providing some after-hours time for youth respite while parents attend on-site meetings
- Responsible for bringing in guest speakers, child advocates, etc. to engage youth in various activities to build and/or enhance life skills.
- Address emergency situations with youth per Salvation Army protocols
- Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers involved in youth programs, ensuring adherence to program goals and safety protocols.
- Develop Youth Programming
- Design and implement age-appropriate programs and activities that promote educational advancement, life skills development, and recreational opportunities for youth residents.
- Conduct regular assessments and evaluations of youth programs to ensure effectiveness and make adjustments as needed.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation related to program activities, participant progress, and outcomes, including input into client databases.
- Foster a positive and inclusive atmosphere within the youth programs that promotes respect, empathy, and personal growth.
- Develop relationships with community organizations, schools, and other stakeholders to enhance program offerings and resources available to youth residents.
- Be available for field trips, educational trips and events, school parent meetings, and off-site youth activities as deemed appropriate.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Knowledge of the McKinney Vento Act and the educational rights of homeless children.
- Knowledge of early childhood education and/or child development
- Knowledge of Individual Education Plans and how to support their implementation
- Knowledgeable of at-risk youth
- Ability to administer/understand assessments and review all screening and testing results with parents.
- Ability to document results and make recommendations/referrals for any additional screening or special services deemed appropriate for youth.
- Must possess empathy, compassion, active listening skills, patience, adaptability, communication skills, and cultural sensitivity.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in education or related field with approved course work. Experience with youth testing/measurement materials and at least 2 years' work experience in education or social service setting. Experience with at-risk youth and/or homeless children is preferred. Must have an outgoing personality with good communication skills and an ability to work with difficult clientele and diverse cultures. Must have strong leadership style and good organizational skills. Must be committed to carry out The Salvation Army's mission is essential. Knowledge of federal, state, and local educational resources is a plus. Must have working knowledge of computers. Must have reliable transportation, a valid drivers' license, and pass TSA MVR check. Physical and Working Conditions Must be capable of performing the above essential duties in an office environment to include using a computer, answering phones, etc., and off-site meeting with volunteer potentials and while on assignment. Work will be indoors in a temperature-controlled environment, as well as outdoors throughout the year.
