DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological support to UCSC students. SHS is deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities through equitable access and culturally competent, high-quality programs and services.

The Primary Care Program includes primary care and same-day care, with the support of on-site radiology, a COLA-accredited clinical laboratory and campus pharmacy. Other departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources & Empowerment) the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance Programs.

Student Health Services employs approximately 150 staff including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. Student Health Services welcomes staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Medical Director, the Associate Medical Director is a member of the University of California, Santa Cruz Student Health Services Management Team and, in conjunction with the Medical Director, is responsible for ensuring that issues affecting clinical practice, quality of care, staffing and clinician job satisfaction are appropriately managed in our Primary Care and Same Day Care Clinics.

The Associate Medical Director assumes responsibility for directly or indirectly supervising primary and urgent care clinicians, and assumes a leadership role in assuring the quality and consistency of care. The Associate Medical Director provides assistance to the Medical Director in matters that affect clinical practice and functions as a strategic partner and consultant to higher levels of management.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $265,000-$310,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

60% - Clinical Staff Leadership

  • Serves as a key member of the Clinical Services Management and Primary Care Leadership Teams.
  • Ensures operations are functioning smoothly through supervision of subordinates.
  • Supervises career and per diem clinicians in Primary Care and Same Day Care Clinics, directly or indirectly, including recruitment, hiring, orientation, proctoring, and performance appraisal.
  • Works closely with the Clinical Operations Team to develop clinician schedules and ensure adequate staffing.
  • Assists the Medical Director in addressing clinic-wide issues.
  • Conducts staff development programs.
  • Oversees the quality and relevance of staff development programs for assigned medical and clinical staff members.
  • Leads the Quality Management Team and addresses issues concerning the quality of patient care and patient satisfaction.
  • Acts in the role of the Medical Director in their absence.

40% - Expert Clinician Resource

  • Maintains an active clinical practice in Primary and/or Same Day Clinics.
  • Evaluates patients, reviews clinical records, and determines if appropriate treatment is being provided.
  • Functions as a resource for consultation on complex or difficult patient cases.
  • Evaluates and reviews patient clinical records as part of the quality management and peer review processes.
  • Shares with the Medical Director the responsibility of evaluating and responding to student comments or complaints about the medical component of visits to SHS.
  • Shares with the Medical Director the responsibility for providing medical consultation and review for laboratory, pharmacy, and radiology services.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited medical or osteopathic school
  • Current MD or DO California medical license in good standing
  • Board Certification or eligibility in an applicable primary care specialty
  • Current DEA Registration
  • NPI (National Practitioner Identifier) number
  • CA CURES Registration (Department of Justice)
  • Possession of a current BLS CPR certification or must obtain within six months from date of hire
  • Advanced clinical skills appropriate to the role as a clinical leader; Effective diagnostic and decision-making skills in handling more difficult cases
  • Urgent care skills and competence in performing minor outpatient surgical procedures and managing urgent medical problems
  • Ability to oversee and lead a team of clinical professionals
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records systems and computer literacy
  • Advanced written communication skills: Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in writing with patients, colleagues, and staff members
  • Advanced oral communication skills; excellent listening skills; ability to receive and give clear and concise information and communicate clearly and effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff members
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and stated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the delivery of clinical services

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 3 years post-residency work experience providing primary care and/or urgent care to adults and/or adolescents (fellowship training may be counted toward this)
  • Experience leading a team of clinicians in a primary care setting\
  • Clinical experience in a college health setting
  • Additional Training or Clinical Experience in areas that impact college-aged patients: adolescent medicine, infectious diseases, contraception, HIV prevention, depression, anxiety, gender-affirming health care, substance abuse and disordered eating.
  • Experience with Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS)

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre-hire criminal history background check and a pre-hire credentialing check.

  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • If selected candidate engages in telehealth visits, they must be able to work remotely from a home office and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement. Job will require occasional working of non-traditional hours.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
  • Will be required to comply with current Student Health Center employee health safety requirements for health care workers as defined by state and federal regulatory agencies; current health safety requirements to be discussed during interview.
