Sr. Science Writer-Editor

Manhattan Strategy Group (MSG), a rapidly growing management and social sciences consulting firm, is seeking multiple Senior Level Science Writer-Editors for the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) Journal. MSG provides consulting services across the federal government in the areas of technical assistance, research and evaluation, information and communications, and management and technology.

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is committed to advancing scientific research and its application to law enforcement and criminal justice. As a Senior Level Science Writer-Editor, you will play a critical role in translating complex scientific information into clear, accessible language for professionals and policymakers.

Job Responsibilities/Duties:

NIJ requires experienced writer-editors with expertise in forensics, life, physical sciences, or social and behavioral sciences. The writers must have the ability to:

• Translate complex materials into plain language.
• Understand sophisticated scientific methods and the application of science to law enforcement issues.
• Write about the implications of science for professionals who work in law enforcement or elected officials who make policies that affect criminal justice.
• The writer-editor, for example, must be able to use plain language to describe scientific findings that are published in peer-reviewed academic journals so that the methods and implications of the findings are conveyed clearly to executive-level leaders who may not have science backgrounds.
• The writer-editor will work closely with NIJ subject matter experts, including federal and contract staff. This will include, but not be limited to, the following:
  • Attending staff meetings (virtually or in person).
  • Interviewing subject matter experts.
  • Working with subject matter experts in drafting, reviewing, and revising content.
  • Attending agency workshops and presentations.

Qualifications:

• 5 + years of directly relevant work experience in writing and editing publications and various documents.
• Excellent writing skills are essential.
• Style Guidelines: Familiarity with style guidelines (e.g., APA, Chicago Manual of Style).
• Relevant writing sample(s) required.
• Public Clearance preferred; or must be able to obtain Public Trust clearance by contract start.

Minimum Experience: Five years of directly relevant work experience writing and editing publications and various documents. Excellent writing skills required and knowledge of style guidelines.
