Job Description

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Prepares patient for exams as required and insures patient comfort and modesty at all times. Obtains and examines the requisition for imaging examination. Always checks patient identification band for inpatients and two methods of identification for outpatients before any procedure is performed. Obtains informed consent and/or contrast questionnaire when appropriate and consults with appropriate Radiologist regarding contrast administration, imaging protocols.
2. Participates in transfer of patients if needed, positions and instructs patients regarding the procedure in order to obtain and effect the desired screening/diagnostic results as specified by the physician.
3. Follows all department established and appropriate policies and procedures as required. Makes changes and adjustments to techniques as required by observance of physician, Supervisor and self-improvement and initiative.
4. Provides protection according to department policy to unaffected areas of the body from radiation exposure in accordance with prescribed safety standards.
5. Calculates and selects proper technical factors as appropriate to the procedure. Selects equipment appropriate to the patient and the examination to be performed. Positions patient and equipment to provide images specified by department protocol or requisition form.
6. Evaluates the images to assure that they contain proper identification and are of diagnostic quality. Adjusts techniques and factors when necessary due to improper studies or quality factors. Checks equipment and accessories to insure they are in proper operating condition.
7. Operates imaging equipment according to specific diagnostic procedure and in conformance to established routines and techniques. Properly utilizes and maintains computed radiography and direct imaging equipment. Reviews electronic images to ensure that it is of acceptable quality and completeness for screening/diagnostic purposes. Utilizes portable x-ray equipment to execute diagnostic procedures in patient rooms, surgery and in other instances where it is not feasible to transfer the patient to regular treatment room. Transfers or duplicates films/images as directed.
8. Follows PACs workflow procedures, working with electronic work lists, repair exceptions, ensuring all electronic images meet quality standards including the correct patient demographics and accession numbers. Ensures all images are acquired and all exams are completed in the RIS (Radiology Information System) in a timely fashion. Works independently in all areas, demonstrating a thorough knowledge of modality policy, procedures and workflow.
9. Initiates hard stop when appropriate and notifies appropriate staff.
10. Monitors patients receiving contrast for adverse reactions and notified appropriate staff if needed. Explains procedures to the patient and family members. Answers patient and family questions, ensuring that concerns are addressed.
11. Assists physicians in the performance of specialized examinations by preparing equipment, syringes and contrast media, holding and turning patients, administering contrast media and passing instruments and supplies. Routinely lays out sterile supplies needed for special procedures. Understands the nature of the procedure to ensure proper imaging and that the proper equipment and supplies are available according to the Universal Protocol.
12. Ensures that images, examination requisitions and other related records are properly completed for proper patient identification, statistical and billing purposes. Prepares images for reading by Radiologist.
13. Works as Radiographic Technologist and performs duties in other areas and/or modalities as needed. Maintains competence in standard radiologic procedures by rotating into radiology areas as assigned.
14. Reports any hazardous conditions or equipment breakdown immediately to supervisor. Takes defective equipment out of service.
15. Maintains work area in clean and orderly condition and ensures that examination rooms are properly supplied with equipment and materials. Initiates requisitions for supplies as required
16. Understands and practices ALARA principles of Radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. RTR licensure in the Commonwealth Massachusetts, this includes a temporary (1 year) MA license..
2. ARRT certification in Radiology is required within 12 months from date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
3. BLS certification.
4. Some specialty modalities may require additional formal training and certification.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Maintain all area specific CEUs for ARRT, DPH according to regulation.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description.Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered medium. Position requires work indoors in a normal patient care environment.
