The Position:
Under general supervision, operates heavy equipment and machinery to assist in the installation and repair of the City's water and sewer utilities. This is accomplished by preparing machinery and equipment for use, performing preventative maintenance, repairing equipment as necessary, and assisting department crew with manual tasks. Other duties may include assisting in inspecting water facilities, hauling debris to the City dump, performing lawn and cleaning maintenance of pump stations, and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position may assist other employees.

Essential Functions

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Assists in the installation and repair of City's water and sewer utilities by operating heavy machinery and equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, Vactor truck, loaders, flow meter devices and any associated apparatus.
  • Maintains City's heavy equipment, machinery and other tools by performing preventative maintenance, repairing equipment when needed, replacing faulty parts, determining what problems exist with equipment and ensuring equipment is properly and safely operating.
  • Assists in inspection of water facilities including Pump Stations, both Elevated and Ground storage tanks, water distribution system, and wastewater collection system by conducting a physical inspection along with preparing the supporting documentation as outlined per State requirements.
  • Provides documents that assist the department in water loss calculations, water quality standards, Inflow and Infiltration issues, and any other associated documents by physically checking water samples, flow meters, and preparing the supporting documentation as outlined per State requirements.
  • Hauls debris as needed by operating trucks and tractors, loading debris such as sand, mud, rock and dirt onto tractor, transporting to the City dump, and unloading debris.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of relevant heavy machine operation work experience. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Texas Class A Commercial driver's license.

  • Class C Water Distribution Certification or Class III Sewer Collection Certification is preferred.


Supervision Exercised:
General Supervision: Work is normally reviewed upon completion, with occasional spot checks while in process, to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards; autonomy is granted at the service or program level; work is subject to general and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Supplemental Information

  • City, State, and Federal rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

  • Water, wastewater, and pump and motor systems, equipment, and operating procedures.

  • Principles of sampling and analysis and equipment used in field testing.

  • Light and heavy equipment operations and maintenance.

Physical Demands / Work Environment:

  • Ability to work outside, including in extreme temperatures, wetness, and humidity.

  • Ability to work with mechanical, chemical, electrical, and fire hazards.

  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods.

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and hand and power tools.

  • Ability to lift, push, pull, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, bend, twist, climb, and balance frequently.

  • Ability to operate city or personal vehicle for business purposes.
