Job Description

Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor (non-tenure track) of Music/Director of Bands

The Department of Arts, Languages, & Philosophy at Missouri University of Science and Technology invites applications for a full time, non-tenure-track position in Music/Bands at the rank of Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor, based on the qualifications and experience, to begin in the fall 2025. This is a 9-month, full-time, non-tenure track position, renewable yearly based on enrollments and strong performance reviews, and may be eligible for promotion after meeting certain conditions.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate-level music courses, contribute to strengthening our department's music program, and fully engage in the life of our diverse, multidisciplinary department. The typical teaching load will be four three-credit courses per semester, usually taught in person, though some courses are occasionally taught online, depending on qualifications and departmental needs.

Program Description
The Performing Arts Program at Missouri S&T is a part of the university's Department of Arts, Languages, & Philosophy. The music program offers a variety of ensembles including the Miner Marching Band, Pep band, two Wind Ensembles, Jazz Bands, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, University Choir, and Chamber Choir. A minor in music is also offered with courses in Music Appreciation, Music Theory, and Music History available.

Primary Duties
This position seeks a candidate capable of a balancing leadership, musical artistry, and teaching. The successful candidate will serve as the Missouri S&T Director of Bands and liaison with the athletic programs. This includes conducting Miner Marching Band, two Wind Ensembles, as well as teaching courses in the music program aligned with the candidate's expertise and the department's needs. It is expected that the successful candidate will achieve a sustained level of recognition by students and peers as an effective educator, as well as develop engaging learning materials and implement impactful teaching methods.

Additional responsibilities of this position will include relevant service activities, e.g., advising undergraduates and music-related student organizations. Additional service to the university will be required and may include attending on- and off-campus student recruitment events, helping to organize ensembles for on-campus events such as Commencement and public receptions, and working with other members of the Performing Arts faculty/ALP faculty at large to develop and promote the program.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
MA or terminal degree in Music, Music Education/Performance or related field.
Evidence of active career as a band director and educator.
Experience conducting bands.

Preferred Qualifications
Earned doctorate (PhD, D.M.A., or equivalent) in Music, Music Education/Performance or music-related field by the time of appointment;
Documented experience working with bands and serving as Director of Bands with the Athletic Band programs.
Experience in curriculum development.

Evidence of experience in recruiting, directing, promoting and maintaining aspects of a music program.
