Research Technician - Biomedical Engineering

The Carnegie Mellon Biomedical Engineering department seeks to transform healthcare worldwide through interdisciplinary engineering innovation and to train future leaders and innovators in biomedical engineering.

We are seeking two Research Technicians to join the Cohen-Karni team in the Hybrid-Nanomaterials and Nano-Bioelectronics Group. In this role, you will assist with living pharmacy device development and implantation studies using animal models. You will oversee surgical, experimental, and general daily activities in the Cohen-Karni group. You will be responsible for setting up the experimental apparatus, maintaining inventory, documentation, animal maintenance, data collection, management, and analysis in collaboration with researchers, veterinarians, husbandry, and facilities staff.

The Cohen-Karni team is currently working on integrated multidisciplinary research to develop cutting edge science and technologies to enhance bioelectrical devices functionality, performance, and longevity. We will be using unconventional approaches for the design and fabrication of bioelectrical platforms with clinical translation as the ultimate goal. Using unique bioelectrical (physical and chemical) sensors and actuators will allow us to tackle grand biomedical challenges such as disease progression monitoring, controlled therapeutics delivery.

  • Without direct supervision, maintaining lab inventory and documentation.

  • Independently maintaining lab instruments, equipment and facilities for teaching or research purposes.

  • Coordinating, setting up for, and running daily experiments (i.e., collecting experimental data).

  • Coordinating, setting up for, assisting and performing surgical procedures.

  • Maintaining an organized laboratory environment, stocking supplies, ordering, inventory, and documentation

  • Coordinating apparatus design, build and refinement.

  • Initiating repair or maintenance of equipment and instruments, as necessary.

  • Maintaining laboratory and animal health records.

  • Monitoring and performing post-operative care of research subjects

  • Maintaining the lab safety plan and safety data sheets as necessary; scheduling safety training for new hires or team members entering new roles; enforcing policies around personal protective equipment.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in the medical or biological sciences or Associate's degree plus veterinary technician certificate or a minimum of two years of research experience preferably in the medical, animal or biological sciences

  • Certification through American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) is preferred.

  • A highly motivated individual with strong organizational, interpersonal skills with experience in experimental data collection and analysis
