Job Summary

The Network Infrastructure Engineer in Network Services within Infrastructure Services (IS) contributes to the planning, design, documentation, coordination, management, and scheduling of IT infrastructure delivery for data communication services, expansions, repairs, and installations. The Infrastructure Engineer ensures IT meets both current and future network needs across the UCSF community, guiding health, education, research, and business missions. The Network Infrastructure Engineer partners, coordinates, and consults with UCSF departments, vendors, internal IS teams, technicians, and analysts to deliver communication needs and installation assignments for copper, optical, and DaaS services. The Engineer drives the delivery and maintenance of network installations (e.g., services, repairs, and upgrades of both inside plant and outside plant communication distribution systems) and is accountable for customer relations, cabling repair and installation, and documentation. The Network Infrastructure Engineer replies to customer issues and concerns and provides troubleshooting and remediation of infrastructure voice/data equipment and services.

Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced communications professional with a full understanding of industry practices and relevant policies and procedures. Resolves a wide range of complex issues. Demonstrates competency in selecting methods and techniques to obtain solutions.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $84,400 - $180,000 (Annual Rate).

The Network Services team within Infrastructure Services holds a critical role in managing, maintaining, and developing the company's computer network infrastructure, particularly ensuring reliable technical accessibility for individuals engaged in vital medical and health research work. Their core responsibilities include providing secure internet and network services, managing IT services, and maintaining data systems. They support end-users, manage system updates, repairs, and connectivity issues, and play an essential role in troubleshooting network issues, optimizing performance, and implementing protocols. They also oversee software and hardware updates, and manage data storage, disaster recovery, and network resilience. Beyond this, Network Services provides specialized technical support to other employees in the organization, with a focus on those involved in medical and health research.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
  • 3 to 5 years of experience working in one or more of the following fields: communication infrastructure, information technology or network operations.
  • Proven experience delivering reliable and quality data communication infrastructure services. Proven experience with large-scale network implementations and upgrades, and ability to deliver reliable and quality network services.
  • Proficiency in L2 protocols including STP, DHCP, 802.1X, LACP, MLAG, VXLAN bridging, etc. along with addressing mechanisms (DNS, DHCP, IPAM, or similar), and practical experience with L1 technologies (SMF, MMF, DWDM, Transceivers, AOC, Twinax, Fiber fan-outs, or similar). Strong understanding of various network hardware platforms such as Cisco, Aruba, Juniper, and Brocade.
  • Experience delivering solutions based on telecommunications industry standards such as ANSI, ITA, EIA, and BICSI. Significant experience complying with state, local, NEC, and NFPA codes and standards.
  • Experience with the installation and maintenance of conduits, fiber-optic cables, and copper cables. Experience with designing and deploying large enterprise cabling infrastructure, and designing outside plant conduit and cable infrastructure systems.
  • Experience designing the layout of horizontal cable pathways, telecom rooms, and backbone infrastructure. Experience conducting budget and pricing activities for infrastructure cabling systems.
  • Experience writing infrastructure specifications and technical documentation, creating network equipment diagrams, and collaborating with various technical resources. Experience creating and editing telecommunication drawings, designing the layout of horizontal cable pathways, telecom rooms, and backbone infrastructure, and designing and deploying large enterprise cabling infrastructure.
  • Extensive experience with Word, Excel, Visio, MS Project, E-builder Copper/Fiber, and other relevant software and network testing tools. Proficiency in reading, reviewing, and analyzing network construction drawings, and authoring standard project-specific documents, business and scope requirements, and project proposal requests.
  • Experience working with Bluebeam and/or AutoCAD software, and designing for a health or campus environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate complex technical ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders. Can relay technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Able to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with a diverse community of colleagues including team members, stakeholders, and customers.
  • Advanced organizational skills and is able to balance competing priorities and deliver concurrent projects to various stakeholder types. Demonstrated experience supervising resources, assembling teams, assigning responsibilities in a project based environment, and conducting budget and pricing activities for infrastructure cabling systems.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills. Ability to uncover root of difficult problems and scope solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines as well as awareness of vision and strategy. Seeks information from multiple and diverse sources to inform solutions. Demonstrated ability to make decisions with integrity.
