Job Summary


  • Under the general direction of the Hospitality Services Team, the Sorter will perform general refuse sorting, loading dock maintenance and material data collection. This function directly works toward reducing the percentage of material UCSF sends to landfill.
    • Sorts mixed garbage materials by type and from waste materials in compliance with laws, regulations and policies.
    • Identifies and distinguishes recyclables (paper, glass, etc.) & compostable from non-recyclables (garbage, etc.).
    • Empties and/or changes sorted materials containers as needed.
    • Per UCSF policies and training, looks out for, reports on, and takes appropriate action regarding any hazardous materials in the waste stream.
    • Maintains a safe work area. PPE will be provided.
  • Must able to stand for the duration of the shift
  • Must be able to lift/push/pull up to 50 lbs
  • Work will be performed outdoors - exposed to the elements.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications

Ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic calculations. Basic mechanical aptitude. Basic ability to perform unskilled building maintenance work.
