Full time- postdoctoral fellow position available for self-driven and curious candidates with a fresh PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular/ cell Biology, Cancer Biology or Neuroscience to join the laboratory in the Department of Pathology, School of Medicine, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus (Aurora, CO, USA). This position will provide a unique opportunity to be part of an enthusiastic research team working towards increasing survival for brain metastasis patients both through basic and translational research. Our goal is to unveil the mechanisms that allow cancer cells to spread to and colonize the brain and to discover novel therapeutic strategies for brain metastases. Ongoing projects include: 1) Defining how estrogens modulate the brain niche (immune cells, astrocytes, microglia) to promote brain metastases progression in younger women; 2) Defining mechanisms for progression of brain metastasis in the aging brain; 3) Preclinical targeting of receptor tyrosine kinases from the prevention or treatment of breast and lung metastasis.

To achieve our goal, we use a variety of neuroscience, molecular biology, cell and tissue imaging and in vivo modeling of metastasis. We work in close collaboration with neurosurgeons and oncologists so we are looking for a team-member who enjoys communication with people from diverse backgrounds. The postdoctoral fellow should have demonstrated experience in tissue culture of primary glial and neuronal cells, basic molecular biology, IF, IHC imaging and confocal microscopy. This fast-paced field will provide the candidate with opportunities for innovation, high impact research and personal and professional growth. As such, the postdoctoral fellow should demonstrate desire to learn, superb organizational skills, ability to prioritize and make decisions, be a problem-solver and innovator with a big dose of self-motivation. The successful candidate will be expected to lead and develop projects and perform independent experiments with a focus on glia-neuron-cancer cell interactions during brain metastatic progression.

Job Description/Duties:

Primary activities in the lab includes, but are not limited to:

  • Performing preclinical studies with brain metastasis patient-derived cancer cells and cancer cell lines in vivo. Isolation and characterization of cancer and brain cell populations from clinical samples and mice, tissue labeling and imaging.
  • In vitro cell culture and cell-based assays, standard molecular and biochemistry techniques.
  • Work independently after initial training with minimum supervision.
  • Design, execute and interpret experiments.
  • Write grants and manuscripts, and present at scientific conferences.
