Position title:
Oakes Elective Courses Pre-six Lecturer
Salary range:
Course credit varies from one to five credits. A reasonable estimate for an appointment to teach a standard five-credit course is $8,282 - $14,100 (based on salary points 1-19). Please see the UCSC Salary Scales and refer to the Non-senate Instructional (NSI) Unit 18 Pre-six Lecturer Academic Year scale. Instructional Workload Credit (IWC) valuation may vary and the course salary will be adjusted accordingly. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year (see Summer Session Faculty and Lecturer Pay).
Percent time:
Variable, based on the course load assigned.
Anticipated start:
Appointments are contingent on the hiring unit's instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments beginning in spring quarter 2024 through spring quarter 2025. Initial appointments made after this period must be made through other recruitments.
Position duration:
Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position description

Oakes College at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an on-going pool of lecturers who may be appointed to teach seminar-style "college enhancement" courses under the direction of the Oakes College Provost. Enhancement courses contribute to the college's longstanding interests, which are ethnic studies and the sciences from a social justice-related framework (for a complete list of Oakes College courses and their descriptions, please see the UCSC Course Catalog). Applicants should be able to draw from expertise in one or several of the major disciplinary subject areas (arts, engineering, humanities, physical and biological sciences, and social sciences).

We are especially interested in applicants with the following areas of expertise: professional experience in social justice or public service organizations, teaching experience (as the instructor of record) in higher education, and/or a terminal degree in their disciplinary subject area.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)

  • M.A/M.S.; or a B.A./B.S. degree and completion of at least one year of a Ph.D. program; or a B.A./B.S. degree and at least two years of teaching experience at the college level. Equivalent foreign degrees will be considered.
  • Experience with providing instruction in an educational environment (e.g., instructor of record, teaching assistant, etc.)
