Opportunity Summary The Power House Engineer is part of the Process Operation Department. The engineer provides initiative-taking leadership, direction, single point accountability and technical expertise required to achieve and sustain optimum reliability, maintainability, and useful life for sugar manufacturing assets. The primary role of the Utilities Engineer is to manage the department's maintenance activities, to improve asset reliability through the elimination of repetitive failures, and to improve asset capacity through design and application reviews. Manage the activities necessary to ensure that equipment/assets are designed, fabricated, installed, operated and maintained in a way that provides the desired performance in a safe, environmentally protected, and reliable fashion Primary Responsibilities Responsible for maintenance services; function as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all maintenance activities for boilers, turbines, pumps, compressors, water and steam lines, valves, and related systems. Monitor boiler water, chemical and fuel levels for optimal performance. Inspect equipment, structures, and materials periodically to identify defects and potential issues. Diagnose and troubleshoot faults, implement corrective actions, and ensure continuous, reliable operation. Ensure compliance with health, safety, and regulatory requirements. Conduct risk assessments and maintain documentation. Coordinate with operations, maintenance, and other departments to align boiler activities with plant needs. Document all operational activities, maintenance actions, and safety measures. Stay updated on technical advances, regulatory changes, and best practices in boiler house operations. Follow the Work Management Process and overview the planned and emergency maintenance activities. Assure the PM program is diligently implemented and that Predictive Maintenance technologies (oil analysis, vibration analysis, thermography, ultrasonic, electric motor testing, etc.) are correctly applied on sugar manufacturing assets. Participate in the Management of Change (MOC) program to initiate, review, and implement process changes which improve safety, efficiency, or reliability for Power House equipment. Perform studies on equipment failures and present solution(s) to management. Prepare diagrams, drawings, charts, calculations, and reports for defining reliability problems and recommending solutions. Provide investigative and problem-solving services as well as technical support to operation, in the areas of engineering, maintenance and plant operation. Collaborate with the Reliability Engineer in performing Root Cause Analysis on significant Reliability issues. Suggest changes to equipment maintenance plans based on failure modes, historical data, reliability principles, and best practices. Facilitate Equipment Criticality strategy formulation and ranking sessions. Manage Equipment Records and assures current data are loaded in the CMMS, and technical library: BOMs, Drawings, SOP's, etc. Drive the parts inventory optimization process. Provide project management for Capital Projects; supervise the fabrication, installation, and commissioning of new equipment. Assist with annual and multi-annual operating and capital budget preparation and monitor maintenance costs. Train and develop the skills and capabilities of the boiler house operators. Assume role of relief Utilities Manager when necessary. Required Qualifications Mechanical, Chemical or Electrical Engineering Bachelor's Degree, from an accredited institution. 5 years of related experience in a heavy manufacturing environment, like ours - Sugar, Oil/Gas, Power Plant, Chemicals, Pulp/Paper, bulk food, etc.) Experience in Operation and/or Maintenance of High Pressure Steam Boilers (Gas, Oil, Coal, Biomass) The following are the preferred qualifications: Boiler Operator License Strong technical knowledge of boiler systems, mechanics, and safety protocols. Ability to interpret and apply relevant codes and standards (e.g., ASME, NBIC in utility contexts.) Effective communication skills for coordinating with teams and stakeholders. Physically capable of field work and ability to work in a confined or hazardous spaces Physical Expectations Regular physical activity to include walking, climbing stairs, and standing; frequent periods of prolonged sitting may be required. Maneuvering around tight spaces in a shipboard environment. Ability to speak, read, hear, and write, with or without assistance.
