Part-time Lecturer in Museum Studies

The Museum Studies Program at Tufts University seeks one or more part-time lecturer(s) to teach two graduate-level courses, Exhibition Planning for Art Museums and Museum Management: Leadership, Fundraising, and Administration, in Spring 2027. We invite applications from candidates interested in teaching both or only one of these courses. Museum Studies courses typically meet once per week, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. on Tufts' Medford campus, but there may be flexibility with scheduling.

Museum Management: Leadership, Fundraising, and Administration will provide an introduction to the core administrative responsibilities of museum staff at all levels: fundraising, budgeting, communications and marketing, event organizing, staff management, HR and legal issues, planning, and different forms of evaluation. Students will gain an understanding of key business and administrative skills essential to modern museum work. Ultimately, a museum's ability to steward and interpret its collection, serve its community, and fulfil its mission depends on how well it is run.

Exhibition Planning for Art Museums will provide an in-depth understanding of how art curators conceive, research, organize, and stage exhibitions of all varieties, in museums of varying size, since the museum exhibition is the chief way the public experiences works of art. In an encyclopedic art museum, what are the differences between a special exhibition and an ongoing installation? How do museums organize traveling exhibitions? A single-artist exhibition and a group show? How does one work with living artists and artist-curators?

MA in Art History, Museum Studies, Material Culture, History, or related discipline preferred. Experience in museum management and/or curatorial experience in an art museum required, depending on whether the applicant wishes to teach one or both courses. Teaching experience at the graduate level strongly preferred.
