Professor of the Practice: Architecture (Non-Tenure Track)

The Architectural Studies Program, within the History of Art and Architecture Department at Tufts University, invites applications for the position of a full-time, non tenure-track Professor of the Practice, with an appointment effective Fall 2027. The selected candidate is expected to offer undergraduate-level instruction with a primary focus on architectural design and a secondary focus on architectural history and theory to help fulfill our mission of enabling students to think critically and historically about the built environment.

We seek candidates who value the achievement of architectural literacy through a liberal arts education. With a core foundation in the arts and humanities, our program encourages interdisciplinary opportunities for our students. As such, we seek applicants who have a keen interest in fostering an architectural studies education drawn from multiple fields that might include art history, engineering, anthropology, sociology, studio art, and environmental studies.

This position is intended for individuals who maintain an active creative practice and consider teaching an integral part of that practice. Candidates must present a portfolio of professional and/or research-oriented work, which might include installations, exhibitions, buildings, speculative work, publications, criticism, or academic scholarship. Ideal candidates will have proven experience in teaching design studios and history courses, and demonstrate the ability to integrate design, history, and theory into their work and teaching.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Professor of the Practice will teach design studios along with the program's gateway introductory architecture history survey course, which also serves students beyond the major. There may be opportunities to teach seminars or lectures on special topics based on the candidate's background and expertise. This position has a 2:2 teaching course load.

The Professor of the Practice will also contribute to the culture of the department by participating in department meetings, planning public and student-centered events, and collaborating with the Director of Architectural Studies to maintain a rigorous and competitive program. Academic advising and involvement in program, departmental, school, and university service activities is expected.

Continued contributions to the field of architecture are essential to effective teaching over time, and the chosen candidate will be expected to maintain their creative practice and/or scholarly activities.

Applicants are required to hold an advanced professional degree in architecture or a related field (such as an M.Arch or M.LA), and/or a Ph.D. in architecture history, design, or an adjacent field. Candidates should demonstrate a record of design expertise through professional work, research, scholarship, and/or public dissemination, and experience in teaching architectural design studios at the undergraduate level.
