Job Summary

This position will act as one of the assistant clinical research coordinator or clinical research coordinators for research projects in the Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine Division's Clinical Research Unit. The primary responsibilities of this position will involve day-to-day management of clinical trials in areas of data management and regulatory administration relating to new and ongoing clinical research in the department. The position requires the use of skills to independently or, with general direction, coordinate and follow through in the overall administration and outcome of clinical studies. The clinical research coordinator will have responsibility for on-call activities. #CA-B

Ast CRC:

  • Ability to quickly develop functional understanding of the field of study (pulmonary and critical care medicine) as applied to clinical research as well as relevant research and administrative protocols and workflows.
  • Ability to quickly develop functional understanding of clinical research trials regulations and policies (including but not limited to local research policies and standard operating procedures, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) is essential.
  • Ability to quickly develop functional understanding of basic anatomy, medical terminology, local systems such as electronic medical records including scheduling modules
  • Ability to quickly learn and interpret federal, local, and institutional regulatory changes and decide how they will impact internal processes.
  • Administrative skills and ability to exercise good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness in making decisions.
  • Display organizational skills and attention to detail so that large volumes of records can be accurately maintained and workload priorities can be determined in an appropriate way to accomplish a task or goal. Ability to multi task and proactively communicate status of work.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate information, practices, and procedures, formulate logical and objective conclusions, and make recommendations for effective solutions.
  • Possess mathematical abilities to perform calculations involving accounting, physiological calculations (e.g. body surface area, etc.), basic statistics, and drug dosage calculations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member in a diverse workforce
  • Demonstrate oral and written communication and interpersonal skills for effective, positive and congenial interactions and correspondence with the general public, co-workers, physicians, patients, caregivers, clinic staff, and other health care professionals.
  • Self-directed and able to work independently, meeting the scope of the program with general supervision and with frequent changes in priorities and deadlines Organizational skills in setting priorities, following through on assigned tasks and adhering to deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail to accurately maintain large volumes of records and prioritize workload efficiently. Ability to multi-task and proactively communicate work status.
  • Ability to work occasional overtime as work demands.
  • Ability to work effectively in a wide range of environments, from private and quiet, to fast-paced and noisy.
  • Ability to travel on occasion for training and educational purposes and to attend meetings including those regarding multi-center studies.

CRC: all the above requirements and the below

  • All Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) must obtain and maintain current certifications and training as required by UC Davis Health (UCDH), federal regulations (CFR), Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, and other applicable laws within 90 days of hire. These include, but are not limited to, human subjects research certification, laboratory safety training, compliance briefings, and certifications for handling and shipping biological specimens. Employees are responsible for ensuring all required certifications remain up to date in accordance with institutional policies and regulatory requirements.
  • High school graduation, GED or equivalent work experience
  • Previous experience in the conduct of clinical research.
  • Knowledge of clinical research trials regulations (e.g., Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP)).
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy and medical terminology (intermediate knowledge preferred).
  • Ability to analyze and interpret federal, local, and institutional regulatory changes and determine their impact on internal processes.
  • Administrative skills and ability to exercise good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness in decision-making.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills for effective and professional interactions with the general public, co-workers, physicians, patients, caregivers, clinic staff, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Strong writing skills, including the ability to compose reports and correspondence using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation, as well as clearly documenting research data on forms.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and general computer literacy to efficiently learn and utilize various electronic platforms for data entry and communications.

Ast CRC Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior exposure to or experience in research.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, particularly MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and data management programs.
  • Previous experience in analyzing datasets to derive basic statistics
  • Maintain a composed demeanor when interacting with all customers, including those who are ill, angry, confused, or emotionally distress
  • Ability to work closely with caregivers and with patients who have a terminal illnesses or advanced disease.

CRC Preferred Qualifications

  • Completion of the UC Davis Clinical and Translational Science Center's Clinical Research Training Program is preferred.
  • Working toward certification(s) to perform basic patient measurements and tests, such as phlebotomy and EKG.
  • Certification as clinical research professional by a professional clinical research society such as SOCRA or ACRP.
  • Bachelor's degree or greater in the sciences highly preferred
  • Research coordinator experience in pulmonary and critical care medicine, cardiovascular or other internal medicine specialty
  • Ability to meet the scope of the program with general supervision and with frequent changes in priorities and deadlines.
  • Organizational skills in setting priorities, following through on assigned tasks and adhering to deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member in a diverse workforce.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the field of internal medicine, preferably pulmonary/critical care as applied to clinical research.
  • Knowledge of UCD EMR & patient scheduling systems.

Department Overview

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine's research unit executes human subjects research in collaboration with the division's clinical faculty. In addition to clinical research, faculty members conduct laboratory investigations at the UC Davis Medical Center and the UC Davis Campus, with the Davis lab located in the GBSF building and the Lung Center focused on basic research.

The research unit actively collaborates with multiple departments across UC Davis Health and participates in multi-site research initiatives with institutions both nationally and internationally. Through these efforts, the division advances scientific discovery in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine, contributing to improved patient outcomes and innovative treatment approaches.

Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
