About the Department

The Department of Surgery is seeking a Director of the Surgical Proficiency Laboratory (SPL) to advance the department's objective of being a national leader in surgical proficiency training. This role requires strong knowledge of medical education within an academic medical center, with particular emphasis on supporting the learning needs of residents and fellows across surgical specialties.

This role reports to the Director of Academic Affairs and will work closely under their guidance across a broad range of capacities to advance and improve education within the department. The Director will also partner closely with education faculty leadership to ensure the SPL is used to its full capacity and will bring a strategic vision for the lab's continued growth, ensuring it remains a valuable resource across the department's academic, research, and clinical missions.

The ideal candidate will bring experience in grant writing and a demonstrated ability to identify and pursue funding opportunities to support surgical education research and lab operations. Familiarity with philanthropy - including identifying opportunities and directly engaging in funding requests - is strongly preferred, as the Director will be expected to help expand the lab's reach and capabilities through both grant and philanthropic support.

Given the SPL's reliance on cutting-edge surgical equipment and technology, the Director must be comfortable navigating external industry and vendor relationships, and should bring creativity and resourcefulness to securing equipment, whether through vendor partnerships, grant funding, or philanthropic support.

Location and Work Schedule:

This position is based in Chapel Hill on the UNC campus, with an expectation of three days per week in the office to support hands-on lab operations and in-person collaboration.

Summary:

A central objective of the Department of Surgery is to be a national leader in human surgical proficiency. To advance that objective, the Director will oversee all aspects of the mission of the Surgical Proficiency Laboratory at UNC. Reporting directly to the Vice Chair of Strategic Business Advancement, the Director provides practical surgical specialty educational support to the Department leadership, School of Medicine, Graduate Medical Education office, and other UNC health departments. The Director operationalizes new and developed surgical curricula and educational initiatives that support learning for students, residents, fellows, nursing, and CME, and in measuring the reach and effectiveness of these efforts. The Director also advances surgical instruction methods by conducting and supporting research projects related to medical education. The Director remains informed of educational regulations and requirements, educational innovations, new surgical devices and new surgical practices.

Professional Experience Requirements:
* At least 7 years of relevant experience in medical education

* Understanding of Cloud Infrastructure with coding experience in Node JS, Python, R and MySQL
* Ability to identify, plan, develop, implement and maintain academic strategies and initiatives for program improvement
