Position Summary

The
Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences within the University of New
Mexico School of Medicine is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Medical
Practice Specialist (MPS) to support the department's continued clinical,
financial, and operational growth. Ophthalmology is an expanding academic
department with increasing clinical volume, faculty recruitment, active
research programs, and a robust residency program. This position will provide
dedicated operational expertise to strengthen clinical workflows, optimize
Modernizing Medicine (ModMed), improve revenue integrity, enhance physician
productivity reporting, and support documentation and compliance across the
department.

The
MPS will serve as a strategic operational partner to departmental leadership,
faculty, clinical staff, UNMMG, University Hospital, and other key
stakeholders. The position will establish clear ownership of practice
operations and serve as the department's primary resource for ModMed workflow
development, process creation and standardization, productivity reporting,
documentation integrity, and revenue cycle optimization. The role will help
ensure that clinical workflows, documentation, charge capture, coding, and
downstream billing processes are aligned and consistently executed.

Key
Responsibilities

  • ModMed Optimization & Workflow Standardization: Develop, implement, and continuously improve specialty-specific ModMed workflows, templates, visit types, attestations, and processes to support efficient clinical operations, accurate documentation, and appropriate charge capture.
  • Revenue Cycle & Revenue Integrity: Monitor and improve charge capture, denials, write-offs, non-billable encounters, documentation-related revenue loss, and other revenue cycle opportunities in collaboration with UNMMG and University Hospital.
  • Physician Productivity & Data Integrity: Develop, validate, and distribute recurring and ad hoc productivity reports; reconcile wRVU and encounter discrepancies; and establish reliable prospective processes to improve the accuracy and credibility of physician productivity data.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Support standardized documentation, teaching physician attestations, coding practices, and clinical workflows to improve compliance, reimbursement, and reporting accuracy.
  • Provider & Staff Education: Provide ongoing education and training to faculty, residents, technicians, scribes, schedulers, and clinical support staff regarding ModMed workflows, documentation requirements, charge capture, and processes that directly impact billing, productivity, and compliance.
  • Cross-System Coordination: Coordinate workflows and reconciliation efforts across ModMed, UNMH, UNMMG, and other clinical systems and serve as a liaison between departmental leadership, clinical teams, coding, billing, and revenue cycle partners.
  • Operational Process Development: Create and standardize operating procedures and workflows, identify process gaps, implement sustainable solutions, and monitor outcomes to support continuous operational improvement.
  • Clinical Practice Operations: Identify opportunities to improve clinical efficiency, patient workflows, premium service processes, ancillary revenue capture, and coordination with external clinical partners.
  • Data Analysis & Strategic Support: Collect, analyze, interpret, and present operational, financial, productivity, and revenue cycle data to support departmental decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Continuous Improvement: Proactively identify opportunities to reduce preventable denials, write-offs, non-billable activity, documentation deficiencies, and administrative burden while improving revenue capture and operational performance.

This
position offers an opportunity to play a critical role in the continued growth
of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. The MPS will help
establish the operational infrastructure necessary to support expanding
clinical services, faculty growth, new workflows, and the department's
continued investment in ModMed. The position will work closely with
departmental leadership and clinical partners to translate data and operational
findings into standardized, sustainable processes that improve financial performance,
compliance, provider confidence, and patient care operations.
