Teaching Specialist

The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Religions and Cultures in the College of Liberal Arts occasionally needs teaching specialists or lecturers to teach courses on a variety of topics that cannot be staffed by regular faculty or graduate students.

This does not constitute a posting for vacancies but establishes a pool of applicants should openings occur during the 2026/27 academic year. Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis through the academic year. Appointments are part-time and may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

The teaching specialist or lecturer may be responsible for all aspects of teaching, including course design, lectures, laboratory exercises, and grading. Applicants will be selected from this pool on an as-needed basis for appointments for the 2026/27 academic year (fall and/or spring terms) and/or Summer 2027.

Required Qualifications:
* M.A. in Hebrew (or Hebrew instruction), Classics (Greek or Latin), Religious Studies, Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, or related field
Preferred Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in Hebrew (or Hebrew instruction), Classics (Greek or Latin), Religious Studies, Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, or related field
* Previous teaching experience at the collegiate level
Applicants with a M.A. will be appointed at the Teaching Specialist level; those with a Ph.D. will be appointed at the Lecturer level.

The Department of Classical and Near Eastern Religions & Cultures is devoted to the study of the interconnected cultures and languages of the ancient Mediterranean world, from the dawn of civilization in the Near East through Late Antiquity. We consider these societies and the literatures, religions and artifacts they produced as of interest in and of themselves, while recognizing that they are sources of many modern practices, ideologies and institutions. We also regard them as a reservoir of alternative modes of thought and community, and thus as a means of reflecting on the nature and problems of the modern world.

We are committed to the study of antiquity because this contributes to understanding the present and preparing the future. To understand the intellectual and cultural heritage of antiquity, we study original sources in original languages with the modern critical approaches of our disciplines. Much of our work is accordingly literary, philological and historical in character. We also ask broader questions about ancient values, beliefs, and political and social structures, with particular attention to religious communities and convictions and their legacies.

Pay Range: Teaching Specialists and Lecturers are paid per credit/course as follows, depending on education, qualifications and experience:

Teaching Specialists:
3 credit course: $4,500 - $10,500
4 credit course: $6,000 - $14,000
5 credit course: $7,500 - $17,500

Lecturers:
3 credit course: $4,500 - $15,000
4 credit course: $6,000 - $20,000
5 credit course: $7,500 - $25,000
