Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA/APP) Neurology

Bring your clinical judgment to a pivotal new role supporting complex neurological care at UVA Health. As the first Advanced Practice Provider dedicated to the inpatient Neurology service, you will help expand coverage, strengthen continuity, and influence how this growing APP model develops.

This is an opportunity to practice across inpatient neurology teams including: stroke, neuro-oncology, general neurology service, and inpatient neurology consultation services within a collaborative academic environment. The Role

As an inpatient Neurology APP, you will care for patients whose conditions demand strong assessment skills, adaptability, and close coordination across specialties. Your practice will include acute stroke, cancers of the central nervous system, neurological complications of cancer and possibly seizures, epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, demyelinating disorders, neuropathies, and other complex conditions requiring neurological consultation.

Your average day will combine direct patient management, consultation, care coordination, advanced neurological assessment, and collaboration with Neurology residents, neurohospitalists, subspecialists, and other inpatient teams. You will have the support to build specialty expertise while progressively increasing your clinical independence.

Key responsibilities include:

• Manage and coordinate care for hospitalized patients across stroke, neuro-oncology, and general neurology and consult services

• Participate in stroke alerts and stroke codes, working closely with Emergency Medicine, Neurology, and Neurosurgery

• Perform comprehensive neurological evaluations and contribute to diagnostic and treatment planning

• Provide inpatient neurological consultation for patients across multiple hospital services

• Support the care of neuro-oncology patients receiving advanced treatments such as chemotherapy

• Coordinate transitions with ambulatory Neurology teams to promote continuity and appropriate follow-up

• Perform or develop proficiency in procedures such as lumbar puncture, based on service needs and demonstrated competency

• Partner with physicians, residents, and operational leaders to develop, refine, and continuously improve the inpatient Neurology APP model

Neurology-specific experience is preferred but not required. This team welcomes both experienced APPs and new graduates who bring a genuine interest in neurology, a flexible mindset, intellectual curiosity, and enthusiasm for helping build a new program. Comprehensive onboarding, training, and mentorship will support your transition into the specialty.

• Supports development of best practices and protocols in specialty

• Serves on committees and workgroups to enhance patient care

• Provides education to learners in the clinical space

• Mentors new team members

Administration

• Contributes to clinical quality improvement work

• Participates in professional governance through the APP Council

• Attends team development meetings at local and departmental levels

Professional

• Adheres to ASPIRE values in all professional interactions

• Maintains appropriate licenses, certifications, and specialty training competencies

• Participates in local, state, and national professional organizations

Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master's degree.

Experience: Department and unit specific.

Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, and Physician Associate) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs.
