Summary of Job Duties:The Research Technician provides support for research projects within the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The Research Technician will perform general and more specific laboratory tasks, including: cleaning and sterilization of glassware, general laboratory cleaning, preparation of cell culture media and chemical solutions using appropriate aseptic techniques, light maintenance of lab equipment (including water baths, incubators, etc.), performance of basic biological and immunological techniques (in vitro cell culturing, cultivation of viruses, cloning, bacterial culture, ELISAs, ELISpots, immunofluorescence microscopy, etc.), maintenance of chemical inventories, and data entry. Specifically, this position requires 100% effort towards research grants supervised by Dr. Craig Forrest. Qualifications:

High School diploma/GED required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Candidate should be willing to work with, handle, and perform experiments involving laboratory mice.

  • Prior experience with the following techniques and skills will factor heavily into consideration of the candidate: working with laboratory mice, virus cultivation, bacterial cloning, protein purification.

  • Prior experience in sterile culturing techniques is a plus.

  • Applicant should have a basic knowledge of the equipment used in a research laboratory.

  • Applicant should be capable of formulating and making stocks of media and other chemical reagents.

  • Ability to keep organized records and notes is essential for the job.

Physical Requirements:

  • Can stand near the bench, sit for extended periods of time to work in a biosafety cabinet, stand to arrange apparatus on the bench, handle fragile apparatus, and frequently walk between labs.

  • Capable of lifting up to 10 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree from a 4-year college or university with coursework in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry.

  • At least 2 years of laboratory experience, preferably in Biochemistry, Cellular or Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or a closely related discipline.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain animal colonies, including breeding, weaning, and genotyping of mice.

  • Generate virus stocks for experiments and prepare competent bacteria.

  • Order laboratory supplies; clean and sterilize glassware; and perform general laboratory cleaning and restocking.

  • Perform and assist with experiments that directly contribute data to ongoing research efforts, including viral infection of mice; harvesting and processing mouse tissues; isolating immune cells; preparing samples for flow cytometry; conducting molecular biology procedures related to viral infection; molecular cloning; protein biochemistry; and immunohistochemistry.

  • Perform light maintenance of laboratory equipment, including water baths, tissue culture hoods, microscopes, and related equipment.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
