Job Summary:

Responsible for building systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building automation systems) engineering design and construction. Participates in the oversight and development of University Design Guidelines and Specifications. Supervises the MEP design review process for all projects at the Evanston and Chicago campuses. Serves as liaison between the General Contractor, Architect, Engineer and the University on building systems. Provides ongoing quality control and inspection connected with new construction and remodeling of existing facilities for the University. Serves as Project Manager for complex engineering focused renewal and replacement projects. Supports Building Commissioning on large complex projects.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the review process of engineering design documents to ensure compliance with University requirements
  • Technical lead Central Utility Plant Improvements
  • Coordinate the activities of the Owner's Commissioning Agent with the General Contractor and Consultants and communicate status with FM Operations.
  • Provide on-site review/coordination of construction projects to assure compliance with plans and/or specifications.
  • Monitors and confirm that contractors are engaging in a comprehensive coordination process.
  • Observes all work-in-progress at construction sites,
  • Evaluate construction problems and participates in identifying appropriate alternatives and solutions.
  • Negotiates necessary changes
  • Assures timely completion of projects.
  • Verifies and approves applications for payment
  • Reviews shop drawings.
  • Serves as Project Manager on complex engineering-focused renewal and replacement projects.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering.
  • A minimum of eight years of experience in engineering design, or construction.
  • Demonstrated experience as a design engineer, or contractor on billion-dollar capital improvement projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in the planning, budgeting, estimating, scheduling, overseeing, and completing building mechanical and electrical construction projects.
  • Substantial experience working with architects, engineers, contractors, and owners in the execution of capital projects.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Demonstrated experience in design and construction of building mechanical, electrical systems, or fire/life safety systems and working knowledge of others.
  • Working knowledge of building automation systems (DDC, SCADA, security/data, life safety).
  • Understanding and applicable knowledge of design and construction processes, including building commissioning.
  • Working knowledge of codes and regulations that apply to the construction of campus facilities.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the contract documents, administrative policies and procedures, daily correspondence, shop drawings, coordination drawings, and other project documents
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with a broad variety of people using both oral and written communication skills.
  • Computer Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)

  • Registered Professional Engineer
  • LEED Accredited Professional
  • Experience in Research Lab engineering system design
  • Experience managing single and multi-trade construction projects
  • Experience working with building operations trades
  • OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour "Construction" certification

Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)

  • DDC Controls - Johnson, Siemens, Tridium
  • SCADA

Target hiring range for this position will be between $138,000-$150,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data
