Position Summary

The Communications Specialist will play a key role on the public relations and social media team at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital and lead the development of external communications strategies in alignment with organizational priorities. This position will develop and maintain relationships with internal audiences, including executive leadership and hospital experts, and external audiences, including journalists, community stakeholders and social media influencers, to advance awareness of Johns Hopkins All Children's mission, vision and values. This position will craft media pitches, write stories and host media crews on site on a regular basis. Video shooting, editing and scripting experience is a plus. The role will provide communications counsel and guidance to internal clients to help achieve organizational goals. The position will be responsible for coordinating and liaising with other Marketing and Communications specialties to achieve client-specific goals. This role will lead operational processes and analytical tasks as needed and coordinate with department colleagues to implement projects and initiatives. The role will also use the media analytics program to track and measure media placements and impact.

Additionally, the position will participate in an on-call rotation for media relations coverage and emergent institutional communications needs, which could include onsite expectations.

Education

College degree in journalism, communications or equivalent required.

Demonstrated experience in working with news media and knowledge of academic medical center culture and organization a plus. Effective use of communication tools, including print, web, media relations, electronic media and other e-communication tools. AP Style and ability to apply institutional style standards consistently. Familiarity with media tracking services and databases preferred.

This position requires flexibility and availability to travel to Johns Hopkins All Children's locations across West Central Florida for on-call assignments and media escort duties, occasionally on short notice.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of experience in journalism, media relations or public affairs, preferably for a healthcare organization, is required. Requires demonstrated experience working successfully on deadlines and designing and implementing communications plans and strategies. Demonstrated experience in implementing effective external and internal communications plans and strategies.

Requires strong communication skills and proven ability to precisely and objectively communicate information; give and receive clear messages; work comfortably in a fast-paced environment; effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects at once; meet demanding deadlines; strong organizational skills and attention to detail; sound judgment and discretion; and the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Ability to take direction. Experience working with news media is strongly preferred.

Salary Range: $26.51/hour - $43.76/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
