SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in Washington, DC, helping them break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them.

Our more than 30 programs throughout the district provide comprehensive services that lead to mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training, living-wage employment, and affordable housing. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare, and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.

Compensation: We offer our employees a competitive compensation and benefits package that reflects our organizational culture, mission, and core values. The salary range for this position is $168,376.00 to $178,289.28 and may be commensurate with experience.

Position Description: The Chief Housing Development Officer provides executive leadership for the planning, development, and execution of the organization's housing development strategy. Leads the development of multifamily transitional and affordable housing, including single-room occupancy (SRO) housing, apartment communities, and senior housing, while also overseeing the acquisition, development, and redevelopment of non-residential properties that support the organization's mission and strategic growth.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm; This is a hybrid position. Up to 3 days in-office per week; Some flexibility is required for external meetings with the community, etc.

Required: Bachelor's Degree, 5 years of experience in housing development, 5 years of experience in a leadership or supervisory role

Preferred: Master's Degree, 10 years of experience in housing development, 10 years of experience in a leadership or supervisory role

Expected Contributions: Housing Development



  • Prepare and review legal documents for housing development
  • Keep Property Management department informed of compliance requirements. Collaborate with Property Management department as needed.
  • Identify properties for potential acquisition and negotiate contracts for properties to be acquired.
  • Coordinate development budgets and pro forma statements
  • Perform due diligence required by funding entities
  • Oversee project timelines and budget maintenance
  • Create housing development reports such as status reports, forecasting reports, budget reports, etc.
  • Oversee feasibility studies such as environmental studies, engineering studies, or financial feasibility studies.
  • Apply for public funding and loans.s
  • Collaborate with Facilities Management to develop standards for housing materials and products.
  • Forecast and track cash flow for projects
  • Maintain communication with project stakeholders
  • Obtain bids from contractors experienced with affordable housing projects
  • Develop and maintain relationships and collaborate with local government agencies and community partners


Strategic Leadership



  • Participate in the overall strategy and decision-making of the organization in conjunction with members of the Administrative team
  • Oversee and provide clear direction and leadership for all programs and departments under portfolio
  • Ensure compliance with standards and expectations for programs and departments
  • Oversee budget development for programs and departments in portfolio, and use sound judgement to leverage resources in accomplishing department goals; Administer budget and comply with SOME financial reporting requirements
  • Oversee exploration of alternative funding sources for programs and departments in assigned portfolio


Knowledge/Skills & Abilities:



  • Strong knowledge of real estate acquisition, financing, public funding, building management, and contract management
  • Ability to assess and manage risk factors affecting projects and the organization
  • Strong understanding of successful design of housing development activities
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with an attention to detail
  • Proficient with MS Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Project Management skills
  • Strong administrative and supervisory skills
  • Knowledge of property management software


Reports To: President/CEO

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift to 30 pounds. Must be able to travel off-site using his or her own transportation methods. Requires looking at a computer screen for several hours a day. May be required to sit for long periods. This position may be active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing.
