What to Expect
Optimus is Tesla's humanoid robot-our boldest step toward a future of sustainable abundance through useful AI and advanced robotics. As the program scales from prototype to production, reliable software diagnostics are essential to keep robots operating at high uptime. Join the Diagnostics team to create, automate, and refine the software tools, test frameworks, and diagnostic capabilities that let manufacturing, service, and engineering teams quickly understand, debug, and recover Optimus at scale. This is a hands-on software-centric role focused on system-level validation, test automation, data-driven root-cause analysis, and continuous product improvement.
What You'll Do
- Create test plans, execute system-level testing, and write test scripts/automation to validate Optimus software behavior
- Debug deployed robots by developing reproduction sequences, isolation techniques, regression suites, exploratory tests, and systems-integration tests
- Build software-based diagnostic methods, tools, and telemetry that identify failure modes at scale using live/logged signal data, manufacturing records, and technician feedback
- Lead root-cause investigations of field and factory issues through fleet data analytics, source-code inspection, hardware/software exploratory testing, fix recommendations, and post-change validation
- Identify software (and related hardware) failure modes, surface trends, and drive resolution with development, manufacturing, and quality teams
- Maintain clear documentation and define the signals/data that must be captured for diagnosis, warranty, remanufacturing, and behavioral validation
- Partner with developers on new-feature launch readiness, localization, and product validation
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
- Python and bash scripting
- Experience with complex electromechanical systems and knowledge of how sensors, actuators, and controllers interact
- Strong software fundamentals and system design instincts; you write tools people use under time pressure
- Clear communication skills and ability to explain complex failures to diverse audiences
- High agency and curiosity: you dig into how systems work and fail, and drive problems to closure
- Hands-on experience with robots (industrial, humanoid, academic, or competition) and familiarity with robotics protocols (CAN, EtherCAT, Ethernet) preferred
- Experience building UI/visualization for real-time systems preferred
- Prior diagnostic, test, or field-support role for a physical product preferred
