Junior Engineer Structural/Mechanical

JP Donovan Construction
United States, Florida, Rockledge
201 Paint Street (Show on map)
Jul 24, 2026
JP Donovan Construction LLC, together with its sister companies JP Donovan Fabrication LLC and JP Donovan Precision Machine LLC, is a vertically integrated construction and manufacturing operation serving government and commercial aerospace clients on Florida's Space Coast, home to Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Our self-perform capabilities span general contracting, design-build construction, structural steel fabrication and erection, and precision machining - allowing us to take mission-critical launch infrastructure from engineering through fabrication to construction and erection under one roof. Few places offer an engineer the chance to watch their drawings become steel in the shop next door and stand at the launch pad where it goes to work.
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are hiring two Junior structural or mechanical Engineers with a focus on detailing, CAD, and design. Reporting to a Senior Engineer, you will develop shop and erection drawings for fabricated structures and mechanical systems supporting launch infrastructure and aerospace facilities. This role is built for an early-career engineer who wants more than a desk: you will work steps away from our on-premises fabrication shop, see your details produced in real time, and visit local project sites as your work is erected and installed. As your experience grows, your responsibilities will expand from detailing into connection design, fabrication engineering support, and ultimately field engineering support.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and revise shop drawings and erection drawings for structural steel and mechanical assemblies using TEKLA and CAD tools.
  • Support connection design and engineering calculations under the direction of a Senior Engineer.
  • Provide day-to-day engineering support to the fabrication shop, including resolving detailing questions, verifying fit-up, and incorporating as-built feedback.
  • Perform drawing checks, quantity take-offs, and material lists supporting fabrication and procurement.
  • Coordinate with project management, shop leadership, and field crews to keep drawings aligned with fabrication and erection sequences.
  • Participate in site visits to local project locations to observe erection, verify field conditions, and support installation.
  • Maintain drawing logs, revision control, and document quality standards consistent with mission-critical aerospace work.
CAREER PROGRESSION
This position is designed to grow. You will begin with a detailing core, progress into connection design and fabrication engineering support, and - as your capabilities develop - take on increasing field support responsibilities at active project sites. Working alongside experienced engineers, fabricators, and builders, you will gain end-to-end exposure that few early-career roles can match, with a clear path toward professional licensure.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil/Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 0-4 years of relevant engineering, detailing, or design experience (internship and co-op experience welcomed).
  • Working knowledge of engineering drawings, drafting standards, and design fundamentals.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain badging for access to Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • EIT certification or successful completion of the FE exam (or intent to pursue).
  • Experience or coursework exposure to TEKLA Structures - training will be provided.
  • Experience or coursework exposure to CAD platforms (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar) - training will be provided.
  • Familiarity with structural steel fabrication, welding, or machining processes.
  • Genuine interest in the full engineering-to-fabrication-to-construction/erection lifecycle.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This is an on-site, office-based position with our fabrication shop located on the same premises - your detailing work and the people building from it are never more than a short walk apart. Periodic field work at project sites in the local area is part of the role and will grow with your experience. You will operate in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment supporting both government and commercial aerospace clients, where schedule discipline and quality are paramount.
WHAT WE OFFER
A competitive compensation and benefits package, structured mentorship under senior engineering staff, hands-on training in TEKLA and CAD, and a front-row seat to some of the most demanding and rewarding construction work in the country - the launch infrastructure powering America's spaceflight programs.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
