The Career Development office is a division of the College of Arts & Sciences Student Services & Admissions Office and a member of the Cornell Career Network. The College of Arts & Sciences has 4,500+ undergraduate students, representing different backgrounds and cultures from across the U.S. and the world. Career Development serves all undergraduate students, as well as recent graduates up to 5 years after graduation, on all career related topics including internship/job search strategies, graduate and professional school admission, major and career exploration, interviewing, and job offer negotiation. Our very busy office serves over 2,500 unique students each year through individual appointments, workshops, and events.

Arts & Sciences Career Development is part of the Cornell Career Network. The Cornell Career Network is a collaborative, campus-wide ecosystem that helps students explore options, refine goals, and build skills and connections for success. Career development is coordinated through a hybrid model led by University Career Development, which oversees strategic planning and operations. The UCD team strategically leads a coordinated approach to employer engagement, advising and education, with services and initiatives conducted in partnership with college and school-based teams across the university.

The primary responsibility for this role will be student career coaching with an emphasis on first-generation and low-income student support and administration. Guide students on career development and job search issues including, but not limited to: major/career exploration, career planning, job/internship search strategies, resume/cover letter review, interview skills and feedback, job offer evaluation, salary negotiation, and resource referrals. Coach students on graduate school, including, but not limited to: determining if/when to attend graduate school, identifying schools, reviewing application materials, and evaluating admissions offers. Conduct behavioral and case practice interviews with students and provide positive and constructive feedback. Administer and interpret career-related testing and assessments. Review applications for the Arts & Sciences Summer Experience Grant and Nexus Scholars. Refer students to campus resources.

Under the leadership of senior staff, assist with the Pathways Internship Program, a career exploration and development program that empowers first-generation college students, the Summer Experience Grant, a program which assists students in funding their summer experiences, and Professional Development Funding. . Collaborate with the Assistant Director on implementing the Pathways Internship Program (PIP), including: developing the application materials, evaluating and selecting participants, creating and assessing learning outcomes, counseling a cohort of students in identifying a career enriching summer experience, and awarding funding. Collaborate with the Director and Program Coordinator to review applicants for Professional Development Funding and counsel awardees on relevant career development steps, and how to utilize funding.

Educate students on career development issues using various media including workshops, lectures, seminars, print materials, web pages, and other technology. Develop, update, and present workshops that meet student needs for career development and planning. Assist Assistant/Associate Director with creating and conducting career related workshops for the First Year Advising Seminar. Evening or weekend hours may be required in order to facilitate programs and workshops. Assist with the creation and maintenance of the Career Development Toolkit, on-demand career content offered via Canvas. Research trends in hiring and interviewing, and assist in creating/maintaining resources as applicable.

Participate in Cornell Career Network committees and working groups, especially those that pertain to first-generation and/or low-income individuals. Collaborate with colleagues in Arts & Sciences Student Services, the Cornell Career Network, and other offices across campus. Attend events hosted by campus partners, such as the Office of Academic Discovery and Impact, and others to meet students where they are and to encourage utilizing Career Development services. Participate in Admissions events for first-generation college students. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with 1-2 years of experience working in higher education or equivalent combination.
  • Must have strong student services skills and the desire to work with college students.
  • Professional, diplomatic demeanor required to interact with current/prospective students, parents, alumni, employers, staff, faculty, and other constituents with diplomacy and tact.
  • Commitment to/understanding of the liberal arts and sciences mission, and how to assist students in utilizing their education/skills in obtaining their career goals.
  • Knowledge of career/student development theories, especially those related to first-generation college students, and the ability to apply them while interacting with students is necessary.
  • Strong coaching, presentation, teamwork, and collaboration are required.
  • Accurate spelling, grammar, writing, and editorial skills are necessary to review students' application materials.
  • Must be team player to work across a College based office, the Cornell Career Network, and colleagues in the College of Arts & Sciences Student Services.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to an individual who was a first-generation and/or low-income college student themselves.
  • Master's degree in higher education or counseling.
  • Knowledge of and ability to integrate NACE Career Readiness competencies into counseling and programming.
  • Ability to understand the needs of high achieving Ivy League students, and counsel students regarding stress management.
  • Familiarity with online career tools, such as Handshake, a plus.
