Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Fire & Life Safety Systems Supervisor, the Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for Campus Fire Alarm Systems installations, programming, operation, maintenance, inspection, testing, Fireworks monitoring networks, other system connections, and inventory. The incumbent inspects in-progress construction work and performs final inspections to ensure all work performed complies with applicable codes. Department description: The UCSF Facilities Services Department (FS) is committed to creating an exceptional campus physical environment to support the research, teaching, health care, and community service mission of the University. Installs/Maintains campus fire alarm systems Objective: To ensure that existing campus fire alarm systems and devices are installed, operational and maintained in compliance with applicable codes. Incumbent tests, installs, programs, maintains, and repairs campus fire alarm systems and devices; performs disconnections, relocations, and reconnections of fire alarm system devices and equipment on construction and alteration projects; inspects in-progress construction work and performs final inspections to ensure that work performed complies with applicable codes; and performs tie-ins of new fire alarm systems devices. Incumbent will also obtain and remain current on all training and certifications required by the manufactures to service systems hardware and software. |

Assists contractors and staff associated with testing and installation of fire and life safety systems Objective: To ensure proper installation and testing techniques are employed by assigned personnel (whether in-house or contracted labor is used). The incumbent will meet with test or installation personnel and assist as directed by the Manager of Fire and Security Systems. Required:
Two years of formal fire alarm systems technician experience with Edward EST-3 Fire Alarm systems, installation & programming and Fireworks stations. Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations; two (2) years of experience at the operational level in an appropriate craft; and knowledge and abilities Demonstrated theoretical and working knowledge of electricity, electronics, and electronic and computerized fire alarm system design and operation. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot fire alarm system failures. Demonstrated knowledge or ability to obtain manufacturers certification on the following systems: Edwards Systems Technology panels and networked fire alarm systems. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and fire system schematics. Demonstrated computer skills with MS Word, Excel, Access, NT 4.0 and XP operating systems. Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes. Ability to communicate clearly in writing and orally with contractors and design consultants. Demonstrated ability to give clear written and oral instructions. Fingerprinting, background check, and physical examination required.
Preferred:
- Knowledge and working experience with University and/or Medical Center fire alarm requirements.
- Understanding of EST Fireworks stations networking with fiber optics.
- Possess NICET level 2 or higher fire alarm certification.
- Posess a valid CA Driver's License
