Job Description

Position Summary

The Director of Faculty Development and Continuing Education provides strategic leadership, program management, and operational oversight for the School of Dentistry's faculty development initiatives, continuing education enterprise, and selected educational special projects. This position advances the School's mission through the development of innovative faculty development programs, high-quality continuing professional education offerings, accreditation support activities, leadership development initiatives, and educationally focused grant-funded programs.

The Director works collaboratively with the Dean's Office, Associate Deans, department leadership, faculty, staff, external partners, and community stakeholders to enhance teaching excellence, promote educational innovation, support accreditation compliance, generate continuing education revenue, and strengthen workforce development initiatives. The position also provides leadership for pathway programs that prepare students from educationally and/or academically disadvantaged backgrounds for successful admission to dental school and careers in oral health professions

This position requires strong project management skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement through data-informed decision making. Periodic travel throughout Missouri and Kansas is required to support continuing education programming and external partnerships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Faculty Development, Teaching Excellence, Mentoring, and Leadership Development

  • Provide strategic leadership for the School of Dentistry's faculty development program.
  • Plan, implement, evaluate, and document outcomes for faculty development initiatives including annual faculty in-services, retreats, course director workshops, teaching academies, and Lunch Time Learning programs.
  • Establish, implement, and assess educational methodology training and on-boarding programs for new faculty.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive faculty mentoring program for new School of Dentistry faculty to support their transition from clinical practice into academic teaching and scholarship.
  • Create resources, training materials, assessment tools, and support structures that promote effective mentoring relationships and faculty success.
  • Mentor faculty in evidence-based teaching practices, curriculum development, assessment methods, educational scholarship, and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.
  • Serve as a resource and consultant to faculty developing continuing education courses by providing guidance on instructional design, adult learning principles, effective teaching strategies, learner engagement, and ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) requirements.
  • Develop and coordinate a leadership development program for mid-career faculty interested in advancing leadership skills and preparing for academic administrative roles.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement emerging educational technologies and digital learning tools that enhance classroom engagement, instruction, and assessment.
  • Chair the Faculty Development Committee and oversee faculty development initiatives, funding priorities, funding requests, and budget allocations.

Continuing Education Program Development and Expansion

  • Provide leadership for the School's continuing education enterprise, including strategic planning, program development, implementation, marketing, evaluation, and continuous improvement.
  • Identify, develop, and implement continuing education opportunities that support the strategic priorities of the School of Dentistry.
  • Monitor trends in oral health care, professional education, workforce development, and continuing education to identify emerging opportunities for growth and innovation.
  • Expand continuing education offerings into community settings, healthcare organizations, professional associations, and private dental practices throughout Missouri and Kansas.
  • Develop business plans and implementation strategies for continuing education activities that generate revenue, strengthen community partnerships, and advance the School's mission.
  • Evaluate program outcomes, participation metrics, learner satisfaction, and financial performance to inform future programming and strategic decision-making.

ADA CERP Compliance and Accreditation Support

  • Review and maintain knowledge of current standards, policies, and procedures governing the American Dental Association Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP).
  • Assess existing continuing education policies, procedures, educational activities, and documentation for compliance with ADA CERP requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain processes to ensure all continuing education activities meet ADA CERP standards and expectations.
  • Coordinate preparation for periodic ADA CERP reviews, audits, self-assessments, and reporting requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with School leadership and continuing education personnel to address compliance issues and implement quality improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain documentation and records required to support ADA CERP compliance and institutional accountability.
  • Work closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and other institutional leaders to support accreditation and institutional effectiveness initiatives.
  • Maintain knowledge of Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards, reporting requirements, and accreditation processes.
  • Assist with the preparation of accreditation applications, self-studies, annual reports, substantive change reports, and other required accreditation documentation.
  • Collect, analyze, and report educational outcomes data to support accreditation, assessment, and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Develop and implement evaluation processes to assess the effectiveness of educational initiatives, faculty development programs, and continuing education activities.
  • Develop and maintain systems for clinical calibration tracking and documentation of calibration outcomes.

Educational Program Development and Special Projects

  • Lead strategic educational initiatives and special projects that advance the School's academic mission and strategic priorities.
  • Serve as course director and administrator for educational initiatives such as the Predoctoral Graduation Portfolio program and other assigned courses or programs.
  • Collect, analyze, and report program outcomes data for institutional assessment, accreditation, and continuous quality improvement purposes.
  • Develop and implement processes to evaluate program effectiveness and support evidence-based decision making.

Grant-Funded Program Administration and Pathway Program Instruction

  • Lead the development, delivery, and evaluation of educational programming supported through grant-funded and contract-supported initiatives within the Department of Dental Public Health and Behavioral Science.
  • Design structured learning experiences that prepare students from educationally and/or economically disadvantaged backgrounds for admission to dental school and other oral health professional programs.
  • Develop and deliver curriculum focused on Dental Admission Test (DAT) preparation, application development, professional competencies, study strategies, academic success skills, career readiness, and professional identity formation.
  • Redesign, implement, and continuously improve the Dental Assisting Internship curriculum for incoming dental and dental hygiene students who do not have prior experience working in a dental setting.
  • Provide individual and group mentoring and coaching to support student success and progression toward oral health careers.
  • Assess student learning outcomes and program effectiveness through formative and summative evaluation methods and utilize results to continuously improve educational programming.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, alumni, dental professionals, and community partners to provide high-quality educational and mentoring experiences for pathway program participants.
  • Coordinate educational activities, schedules, instructional materials, learning resources, and logistics to ensure successful program implementation and achievement of grant objectives.
  • Maintain compliance with grant and contract requirements through appropriate documentation, reporting, assessment, and evaluation activities.
  • Collect, analyze, and disseminate program outcome data to demonstrate program effectiveness and support sustainability efforts.
  • Contribute to the development of future grant proposals, contracts, partnerships, and educational initiatives that expand access to oral health careers and strengthen the oral health workforce pipeline.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Collaborate with School leadership, faculty, staff, students, alumni, professional organizations, healthcare systems, and community partners to advance educational initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with community stakeholders, professional associations, healthcare organizations, and oral health partners.
  • Represent the School of Dentistry in meetings, conferences, professional organizations, and external partnership activities related to faculty development, continuing education, workforce development, and educational innovation.
  • Participate on institutional committees, advisory groups, and workgroups as assigned.

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain appropriate records, reports, and documentation related to assigned programs and initiatives.
  • Monitor emerging trends and best practices in higher education, faculty development, continuing education, accreditation, workforce development, and health professions education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 5 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in Dental Hygiene Education.
  • At least five (5) years of teaching experience within a pre-doctoral dental and/or dental hygiene program.
  • Experience with educational technology implementation and online learning environments
  • Experience developing continuing education courses that award CE.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs and faculty development initiatives.
  • Experience with program evaluation including data collection, data management, and data evaluation.
  • Experience working with ADA Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition (CERP) requirements and processes
  • Experience drafting applications and reports for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and accreditation-related reporting activities
  • Demonstrated project management, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience managing grant-funded educational programs.
  • Clinical experience working as a licensed oral health provider.
Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $70,512 - $81,000 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
