Rutgers University - Newark, an urban public research anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise, is seeking an Interim Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Interim Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs ( EVCAA) serves as the chief academic officer of Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N) and is the University's principal academic architect. Reporting directly to the Chancellor and serving on the Chancellor's cabinet, the EVCAA provides forward-thinking leadership to elevate academic excellence, scholarship, student success, and operational effectiveness at a highly diverse, urban public research university that is nationally recognized for social mobility, access and opportunity. The EVCAA partners closely with Rutgers University's Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Rutgers-Newark Chancellor to translate vision into execution- aligning academic strategy, resources, and performance systems to strengthen RU-N's scholarly impact, teaching and learning excellence, national reputation and ranking, and Big Ten footprint. Additionally, the EVCAA partners with University Academic Affairs and RU-N for academic planning, accreditation, faculty affairs and institutional effectiveness. Alignment with RU's and RU-N's strategic plan will be paramount. The EVCAA must also work closely with Enrollment Management, Student Affairs and Student Success to advance strategy, student success outcomes and academic priorities.

Rutgers-Newark is an anchor institution "of and in Newark," enrolling a majority-Pell, first-generation and commuter student body, and ranked #5 nationally for social mobility while climbing steadily in public university ranking (currently 36th in the nation). Within this context, the EVCAA leads the academic enterprise, leading schools and colleges and academic affairs units central to institutional research and assessment, student success, portions of faculty affairs, graduate and undergraduate education, and university-wide centers and institutes. The role requires a leader who can partner effectively with the research division to expand research capacity among faculty and strengthen academic rankings; while also upholding RU-N's mission of access and excellence. As both a strategic and operational leader, the EVCAA is responsible for strengthening academic quality and execution across a complex institution.

This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:

  • Improving academic planning and program portfolios, modernizing policies and processes, extended academic reach through innovative and market-responsive online programs and certificates, advancing data-informed decision making and ensuring accreditation and compliance.
  • The EVCAA must be future-forward in building opportunity pathways from cradle to college degree, as the university partners with Newark, the state of New Jersey and the nation in workforce development and expansion.
  • The EVCAA plays a defining role in enhancing RU-N's academic reputation, rankings and visibility - positioning the University as a high-impact, research-intensive, public urban institution whose scholarship, graduates and partnerships drive social mobility, economic vitality and community transformation.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • Must have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution, with scholarly credentials appropriate for appointment as a tenured full professor; academic leadership experience within a public research university, with responsibility for scholarly enterprises; demonstrated success advancing faculty productivity, faculty excellence, student success and shared governance; proven ability to align academic vision with future-forward market demands, operational discipline and measurable results; at least 5-8 years of progressive leadership experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.


Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated success as a dean, department chair or other senior academic administrator leading faculty, curricula and programs;
  • Demonstrated performance in teaching, research and service.
  • Knowledge of accreditation, shared governance and national academic organizations such as ACE, APLU, USU and AASCU;
  • Ability to set long-term academic priorities and translate them into measurable outcomes;
  • Experience with hiring, tenure and promotion processes, evaluation and faculty development;
  • Skill in aligning financial decisions with academic priorities, including program investment and cost management;
  • Understanding of retention, graduation rates and student support strategies as well as proactive methods to utilize academic analytics to inform decision making;
  • Ability to represent the institution with accreditors, donors, government entities and peer organizations;
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with talent that supports effective collaboration and expertise in building teams;
  • Ability to partner effectively with student affairs to develop an academic enterprise that recognizes and supports the whole student.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success in progressively more responsible roles of leadership is preferred.
  • Track record of performance showing increasing extramural research engagement, engagement in teaching and learning innovation, chairing and leading doctoral education and engaging in interdisciplinary and community-engaged scholarship.
  • Understanding or familiarity with institutional research, analytics and performance metrics, particularly those related to social mobility, student outcomes, academic innovation and productivity.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • This position may require off-campus travel and sustained work hours.
  • Predominantly office-based with extensive engagement across campus, the city and state, Rutgers University and external partners, as well as travel and participation in national and international academic forums.
