The Role

The Assistant Center Director reports to the Center Director and ensures that the support services of the program including nutrition and food services, transportation, safety and security of the program is managed effectively and in compliance with Head Start Standards and Federal, State, and Agency policies. You may be assigned to provide center wide oversight in the absence of the Center Director.

You will directly supervise Cooks, Assistant Cooks, Custodians and Program Aides and will oversee scheduling, performance management, and professional development of employees at the center. You will work very closely with the Center Director, teaching and classroom staff to contribute to the overall success of the program, and may be reassigned to various centers as deemed necessary for program operations.

As a front-line representative of Save the Children you are required to ensure the safety and security of children and families that he/she come in contact with and represent the agency values of Accountability, Ambition, Collaboration, Creativity and Integrity.

As a Save the Children employee who will come in contact with children on a routine basis, you are expected to prevent child abuse in every situation by striving, through mental awareness, good practice and training to minimize risk to children. You must take positive steps to protect children who may be a subject of concern and report and respond to any instance of child abuse and promote training and awareness around all child safeguarding obligations.

What You'll Be Doing (Essential Duties)



  • Operational Support and Compliance
  • Assist the Center Director in maintaining quality teaching and learning environments, attends case coordination meetings with other staff to fully integrate services.
  • Work with Center Director to plans for and equip indoor and outdoor areas to meet children's developmental and safety needs in accordance with budget and established standards.
  • Assist with arrangements and schedules of Program Aides/substitutes for the center classrooms, monitors center and staff schedules, arranges for family and staff work days for center improvements, fairs and events, responsible for monthly safety checks, annual safety inspections and completion of licensing requirements in a timely manner
  • Assist with monitoring and compliance with applicable local, state and federal rules, regulations and standards as well as with any state and federal contracts, health, safety and licensing regulations
  • Participate in and facilitate monthly safety centers, fire drills and safety meeting as well as updating of the Safety Log
    Support implementation of "best practices" in early education programming in conjunction with the early childhood staff when applicable.
  • Participates in regular staff meetings to ensure integrated planning and implementation of services
  • Assures compliance with quality program evaluation requirements and relevant Head Start standards and regulations.
  • Record Keeping and Fiscal
  • Maintains filing, tracking, and documentation systems, monitors staff attendance, collects, and verifies staff timesheets, monitors employee on-site file requirements and keeps them secure
  • Work with Center Director in support of the fiscal management of the center, assists in the identification, purchase, and annual inventory of center supplies and equipment
  • Participate in cost allocation related to proportions of Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms in center
  • Monitors Child Plus for timely and accurate data input of children and families' information
  • Supervision and Training
  • Supervises content area managers/specialists/coordinators plans and implements pre-service and ongoing in-service for Cooks, Assistant Cooks, Program Aides, and Custodians.
  • Conducts regular meetings with direct reports, arranges staff training, sets the job standards, goals, monitors, and provides ongoing feedback for performance improvement and submits performance appraisals in a timely manner
  • Support in organizing and implements center staff meetings
  • Review and approves employee timesheets in a timely manner.


Required Qualifications



  • Associate's degree or in early childhood education, child development or human service degree with experience working with children, plus at least two (2) years of relevant work experience in a position that directly relates to the implementation and monitoring of program operations.
  • One year supervisory experience preferred, some experience in financial management and budgeting preferred
  • Proven knowledge of program planning and practices in infant/toddler and preschool center-based programs, thorough knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards, and best practices related to early childhood education
  • Demonstrated knowledge of general business practices including supervision, accounts payable, inventory control, and risk management
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate successfully with individuals and teams at all levels, both internal and external
  • Proven ability to oversee and operate the day-to-day program in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations
  • Proven effective time management, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Physical Requirements related to essential functions: Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 5-10 pounds constantly, performing such activities as sitting, crawling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting and grasping. This also includes some duties that require repetitive action and motion skills, keyboarding and computer use.
  • Clear pre-employment background check requirements, including local, state, and national criminal records check, sex offender registries, employment, and education verifications (including child abuse registry check if required by state regulations) and pass all state and local health requirements required post job offer and prior to employment.
  • This position may require the incumbent to operate a motor vehicle to fulfill certain essential functions of the job. The incumbent should maintain a valid driver's license and remain in compliance with any Save the Children policies pertaining to the safe operation of motor vehicles.
  • Current and former Head Start/Early Head Start parents will receive preference for employment vacancies for which they are qualified.


Preferred Experience:

Supervisory experience preferred, some experience in financial management and budgeting preferred
Previous Head Start/Early Head Start experience preferred
