Community Engagement Coordinator (Off-Campus Housing and Student Community Engagement)

We are seeking a Community Engagement Coordinator who will report to the Director of Off-Campus Housing & Student Community Engagement. This position plays a key role in supporting and advocating for students living in neighborhoods surrounding the Homewood Campus. The individual in this role will be responsible for designing and implementing engaging programming, connecting students with local community resources, and promoting positive neighbor relations through innovative and student-centered approaches. This person is expected to demonstrate a strong understanding of departmental goals, standards, policies, and procedures, along with an awareness of how these align with broader institutional priorities. Success in this position requires the ability to navigate both formal and informal networks within the local community, while maintaining a high level of sensitivity and commitment to meeting students where they are. This includes a focus on direct student engagement, education, and resource coordination to help students thrive while living independently. This role contributes to fostering a supportive, informed, and community-oriented living experience that enhances student success and strengthens connections between the university and the surrounding community.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop programs and initiatives for students living off campus that meet the needs of students and enhances their knowledge and experience. Track participation and assess student learning outcomes to inform future program growth.
  • Collaborate with the Student Community Liaison role to implement community focused programs, such as a good neighbor orientation that promotes responsible student behavior.
  • Provide one-on-one guidance to students assisting them with navigating challenges such as budget management, communication, disputes, and roommate concerns; serving as a mediator when needed.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of common Baltimore City rental codes, laws, covenants, and critical services; manage list of local city resources and up-to-date contact information.
  • Curate, edit, and maintain student facing resources, guides, and toolkits.
  • Build collaborative relationships with various stakeholders including but not limited to JHU Public Safety, JHPD, JHU Student Affairs, and Charles Village Civic Association; work to build relationships between students, neighbors and the community at large.
  • Attend local neighborhood association meetings, serve as a JHU resource for these groups and community members. Maintain awareness of on-going local community activities and events for collaborative opportunities.
  • Maintain and update reporting documents pertaining to occupancy, and demographics, notating trends and future impact.
  • Administer, compile, and distribute results of the biennial off-campus living experience and satisfaction survey.
  • Create content, develop, and expand communications pertaining to the experience of students living off campus via website, social media, publications, and monthly newsletter.
  • Assist with maintaining and editing website utilizing WordPress including the verification of information and hyperlinks; create and maintain pages specific to living off campus.
  • Support general office needs including answering calls, emails, and providing service to walk-ins; provide administrative support as needed.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.

Special Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Ability to think creatively, be innovative, and manage multiple projects independently and/or as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and organizational skills, with a strong attention to detail; analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Necessary to collaborate effectively and build strong working relationships across the department and division, as well as with external constituents including local City Council Members and Neighbor Association Presidents.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and show good judgment when working with students; communicate about issues that are sensitive and confidential.
  • Project management skills, with particular emphasis on the ability to be proactive, resourceful, and self-motivated.

Technical Qualifications & Specialized Certifications

  • Highly proficient with Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva or similar graphic design software.

Additional Information
  • This position will require some work outside of normal business hours and/or weekends.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • One year of experience in residential life, housing operations, college student programming, or related area.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
