Currently recruiting an Internal Medicine Physician, at Fort Hood, Killeen, TX, to provide care at the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center (CRDAMC). The Internal Medicine Physician will work in an exciting and demanding position serving our nation's active duty military service members and their families. The Internal Medicine Physician at CRDAMC may be scheduled for shifts between 0530 and 2300, up to 16 hours per shift, any day of the week including weekends and holidays, and are required to participate in on-call and call-back duties as assigned, with on-call periods ranging from 8 to 24 hours and call-back response within thirty minutes of notification.
DUTIES OF THE INTERNAL MEDICINE PHYSICIAN:
- Performs diagnosis and treatment of the more complex internal medicine problems referred.
- Apply advanced professional knowledge of areas within the field of internal medicine to include, but not limited to, hematology, cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, endocrinology, pulmonary medicine, infectious disease, and nephrology.
- Provide inpatient consultation during duty hours as identified in Part 1.5.37.2.1.
- May serve as attending physician of the inpatient consult service by providing advice on perioperative management and management of other acute medical problems.
- Interacts with emergency department, clinics, other hospitals, and other specialty services to facilitate the transfer of patients into and out of the ward and observation units.
- Performs and interprets medical procedures to include, but not limited to, thoracentesis, central venous line placement, arterial blood gas sampling, paracentesis, nasogastric and feeding tube placement, joint aspiration and injection, graded exercise testing and lumbar puncture and interprets procedures such as electrocardiograms and pulmonary function tests.
- May be used as hybrid physician with both inpatient and outpatient duties, as determined by Department Chief.
- Exchange advice and consultation with other physicians on the diagnosis and treatment of patients in the area of Internal Medicine.
- Performs procedures to include, but not limited to, joint aspiration or injections, sigmoidoscopies, gastroscopies, proctoscopies.
- Refers patients to other specialty clinics for further evaluation on outpatient and/or inpatient basis.
- Perform ambulatory and acute care for patients as well as long term chronic and difficult patients.
- Order and interpret laboratory tests and x-rays necessary to complete medical facts to include, but not limited to, blood counts, urinalysis, sedimentation rates, chest x-rays, and electrocardiograms.
- Consults with department chief and/or other specialists when assistance is required in determining a correct diagnosis or treatment.
- Perform a full range of physician services in accordance with privileges granted by the MTF.
- Direct, perform, or assist in the instruction of other health care professionals within the scope of the clinical privileges or responsibilities.
- Examine, diagnose, treat or prescribe courses of treatment within the scope of training, experience, and privileges.
- Provide preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.
- Order diagnostic tests as applicable as well as request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated.
- Facilitates patient access to continuing medical care by appropriate specialty referrals, appointments, consultations, procedures to schedules and complete delivery of services and/or to other healthcare providers operating within the policies and regulations of the MTF access to care timelines.
- Technically proficient in directing and teaching other medical staff, providing educational lectures and participating in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members. Such direction and interaction will adhere to Government and professional clinical standards and accepted clinical protocols.
- Provide high quality standards of care as mandated by the Joint Commission and as structured by appropriate DHA, CRDAMC MTF, and local regulations and policies.
- May participate in continue medical education programs, in-service training, and informal training, on a space available basis only, as identified in the base contract PWS Part 1.5.45.6.
- May attend periodic meetings and training sessions that are non-contractual or include exclusive government business discussions that may include, but not limited to, morning/evening reports, huddles, grand rounds, group training, patient scheduling and coordination, and/or professional in-house staff conferences/meetings and other professional activities as determined by the department chief that correlate to patient care services performed only. All meetings, forums, training, etc. Will be held during scheduled work hours.
- Contract workers shall not attend meetings with topics discussing government business, policy and regulation making, contract matters, new or existing requirements, new programs, or any other means considered inherently government business or duties. When in attendance of meetings and training sessions, contract workers must be excused from such meetings when the topics change to inherently government business or duties.
- Hospital Credentials Committee determines practice limits and privileges.
- Shall ensure all clinical encounters are documented accurately and completely in the electronic health record (EHR) no later 48 hours past the day of service or as determined by the government.
- Work shall be reviewed through established professional reviews to include, but not limited to, random case review for quality assurance, risk management, and similar procedures.
- Shall be responsible for maintaining and updating their own Competency Assessment Folder (CAF) as required annually or when identified by the government.
QUALIFICATIONS OF THE INTERNAL MEDICINE PHYSICIAN:
- Degree: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.).
- Education: Graduation from a medical school in the United States, Canada, or approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (AMA), graduation from a college of osteopathy approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or graduation from a medical school with evidence of Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification as identified in the base contract PWS Part 1.5.45.10.
- Board Certification. American Board of Family Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine.
- Experience. Shall possess a minimum of two (2) years of post-residency clinical experience within the last three (3) years providing direct patient care in internal medicine. Experience must demonstrate recent hands-on proficiency in evaluating, diagnosing, and managing adult patients across a broad spectrum of acute and chronic medical conditions in accordance with current clinical standards of practice. Background shall reflect competency in both outpatient and inpatient internal medicine settings, including development of treatment plans, coordination of care, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Licensure: Possess a current unrestricted license to practice as a Physician in the State of Texas.
- Internship/Residency/Fellowship. Completion of an accredited residency approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
- Possess a current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration/Certificate as appropriate.
- Shall cope with and be available for emotional patient/family support during potential crisis situations.
- Shall be physically capable of working in a hospital environment with exposure to infectious patients, requiring the need to wear gloves, masks, and/or proper PPE as required by the facility.
- Shall be flexible in working within different environments and locations, within the scope of CRDAMC MTF credentialing practices, when needed during staff shortages, absences, or low patient census.
- BLS for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
- U.S. Citizen (required for access to government computer systems).
- A security clearance background check will be required.
