Research Lab Technician I

University of Southern California
United States, California, Fullerton
Jul 01, 2026

We are looking for a hands-on, reliable technician to join Dr. Karolina Charaziak's lab focused on auditory physiology and neuroscience at USC's Health Sciences Campus. Our research investigates normal and impaired hearing using in vivo electrophysiology, acoustical measurements, and optical imaging in small rodent models.

This is a hands-on animal research position. A significant portion of the role involves direct mouse handling, including surgical procedures and humane euthanasia methods (e.g., cervical dislocation). Candidates must be genuinely comfortable with all aspects of working with live and deceased rodents before applying - this is a firm requirement, not something learned on the job.

Core Responsibilities

* Mouse colony care, handling, and health monitoring

* Performing surgical procedures and terminal experiments

* Conducting in vivo electrophysiological recordings and acoustical measurements

* Supporting optical imaging data collection

* Placing and tracking lab supply orders

* Maintaining lab records, protocols, and regulatory documentation

* General lab organization and upkeep

Required Qualifications

* High-school diploma or equivalent

* Demonstrated hands-on experience working with mice (please describe your specific experience in your application)

* Comfort with the full scope of animal research, including surgical procedures and euthanasia

* Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

* Associate's degree in Neuroscience / Biology / Cell Biology / Biomedical Sciences / Animal Science / Laboratory Animal Science / Physiology

* Specialized/technical training in Veterinary Technology / Laboratory Animal Science

* Experience with electrophysiological recordings

* Familiarity with data analyses techniques (e.g., use of MATLAB)

* Prior experience in a neuroscience or audiology research environment

Position Details

* Full-time preferred; part-time start negotiable depending on fit and availability

* 100% in-person at USC Health Sciences Campus

* Flexible start date

* Competitive salary and benefits, commensurate with experience.

The hourly base rate for this position is $22.43 - $25.11. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
