THE POSITION

As a Legal Assistant 2 in the Department of Labor & Industry, you will take part in meaningful work that supports fair outcomes for claimants and employers. This role lets you develop important legal support skills while assisting with the appeal process. You will be part of a dependable team that values accuracy, teamwork, and service to the public. Your dedication will help improve the experience of Pennsylvanians navigating the unemployment system.


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position plays a key role in supporting the appeal process for unemployment compensation cases by assisting Referees with legal and administrative tasks. You will help maintain accurate records, prepare documents, and ensure timely communication with all involved parties. As a Legal Assistant 2, you will perform the following duties:

  • Hearing Preparation: Review case files, organize exhibits, and schedule hearings based on legal requirements and procedural rules
  • Document Handling: Process legal requests, manage incoming and outgoing records, and distribute materials to appropriate parties
  • Decision Support: Transcribe recorded decisions, review drafts for accuracy, and ensure final decisions address all issues of law
  • Public Interaction: Respond to calls, emails, and in person inquiries while providing clear and respectful information
  • Office Coordination: Maintain electronic and paper files, upload recorded hearings, and support daily office operations
  • Timekeeping Tasks: Review attendance records, enter time data, and verify payroll accuracy for staff

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Work hours are negotiable.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to three days a week, upon successful completion of the training period. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Reading. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a Legal Assistant 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Four years of responsible clerical, investigative or enforcement work including one year of legal clerical support experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
