Position Summary
Reporting to the Laboratory Genetic Program Manager, serves as a liaison of genetic testing for in-house staff, clients, other health care professionals and the general public. Reviews genetic test orders and supports insurance preauthorization processes. Performs data collection and analysis of genetic test utilization. Supports the laboratory genetic program to achieve the laboratory quality and customer service goals by researching and developing policies and tools and improving processes and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Triages phone and e-mail inquiries made to Lab for genetic testing, with support from laboratory genetic counselor and in conjunction with laboratory specimen management staff. Provides information about lab testing, test ordering and insurance pre-authorization to clinicians.
  • Researches and develops reference lab comparisons by researching sensitivity, specificity, detection rates, cost and turnaround times. Maintains and updates client resources, including lab test fact-sheets and hospital websites. Develops standard templates for frequent inquiries and communications.
  • Provides support for the insurance preauthorization process, including confirming test and lab selection, CPT code(s), and providing additional laboratory details to support authorization requests.
  • Ensures coordination of required requisitions and clinical history/pedigree for send-out genetic tests. Obtains logistical guidance for test coordination from reference labs including sample requirements, charges, CPT codes and requisition/clinical documentation requirements. Tracks remote sample collection.
  • Identifies, investigates and resolves specimen and result problems related to genetic testing; collects information about potential systems problems or needs and communicates information to appropriate personnel.
  • Provides administrative support for the coordination of laboratory genetics meetings (e.g., BEST Committee), including scheduling, agenda and meeting minutes management.
  • Participates in on-going quality improvement for the laboratory. Develops, produces and maintains standard Lab policies pertaining to genetic testing. Provides data for Quality Improvement program, and actively seeks quality improvement opportunities. Assesses processes, participates in process design or redesign.
  • Keeps abreast of changes of ICD-10 and CPT codes related to Genetic testing.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Biological Science or related scientific field
Experience:
  • Prior experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred.
  • Customer service in a healthcare setting preferred.

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
