Education and Work Experience:



  1. Education: Education and/or work experience commensurate with the duties and responsibilities required. Must obtain a Food Handler's Card and be responsible for following all guidelines of the food handler's manual.
  2. Work/Professional Experience: Experience in cooking or working in an institutional kitchen preferred. Must be familiar with cooking from scratch as there are very few convenience foods used. The use of kitchen equipment. Able to fill out needed paperwork.


Scope of Position: The Kitchen Helper will assist the cooks. This includes assisting in meal preparation and serving meals. This person will assist in stocking food, organizing donations, maintaining all company equipment in proper working order, as well as in a sanitary condition, cleaning up meals and keeping the kitchen facilities clean. Filling out all paperwork needed. Treating all those receiving services with dignity and understanding, this individual will assist, as necessary, in implementing the rules of the shelter program fairly and equitably. Any special or unusual concern is to be brought to the immediate attention of the supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: The ability to maintain a self-motivated and self-directed schedule. Able to address multiple projects in a time-sensitive manner. Ability to operate commercial grills, ovens fryers, slicers, blenders and other kitchen industrial dishwasher - related tools. Ability to speak and read the English language. The individual must show respect for other employees, associates, clients, and the goals and objectives of The Salvation Army. Have a good understanding of kitchen health codes. Must obtain a Food Handler's Card.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  1. Maintain ongoing professional relationship in all interpersonal contacts and relay all pertinent information concerning clients to appropriate staff member. (Note: Confidentiality Requirements).
  2. Assist cook in maintenance of food preparation area for compliance with health standards and assist cook in preparation of meals as necessary.
  3. Serve meals following strict guidelines.
  4. Cleaning up after meals.
  5. Helping to get the kitchen open or closed for the day.
  6. Filling out all paperwork needed for the kitchen.
  7. Absolutely no food, supplies or material will be distributed without prior approval from lead cook or Administration.
  8. Assist cook in inventory of pantry, receiving donations and maintenance of kitchen.
  9. Comply with health standards.
  10. Assist in assisting and directing volunteers as necessary.
  11. Relay all pertinent information concerning clients to appropriate staff member.
  12. Assist staff with in-kind donations, following all procedures accordingly.
  13. Participate fully in all required staff meetings.


Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., occasionally lift, move, or carry materials up to 200 lbs. with assistance and physically able to do a lot of bending, twisting, stooping & climbing stairs, standing on feet for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hand to finger, hand, or feel objects, tools, or controls; to talk or hear; reach with hands and arms; stand, bend squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision. Work outdoors occasionally, sometimes in inclement weather.

Works on many projects at once with interruptions and noise from ringing telephones, and walk-in traffic, multiple deadlines, and competing priorities. Frequent phone and in-person contact with people from diverse backgrounds who may be angry, hostile, confused, or frustrated.

Organizes projects, sets priorities, calculates, catalogues, inspects, analyzes, plans, comprehends, and cooperates with others, etc.

Work with minimum supervision and work involves a high degree of independence. May be required to make independent decisions that may involve unique or unusual situations and/ or complex issues and dealing with demanding requests and / or timelines.
