Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Theater Technician: Costume Shop for the Theater Department at Mason Gross. Under the direction of the Technical Supervisor of the costume shop, this position will support the day-to-day operations in the costume shop.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Builds costumes according to design, evaluating designs to determine best practices, and executes projects in a timely manner.
  • Assists in maintaining work areas, supplies, and equipment, and upholds safe operations and procedures in the shop.
  • Oversees student workers, assigns projects during work calls, and advises students on construction techniques as needed.

Work Arrangement
Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 or the applicable provisions of relevant collective negotiations agreements, this position requires a fully on-site work arrangement and may be eligible for a compressed workweek or a flex workday schedule. Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent plus two years of experience in draping, creating patterns, and stitching or an equivalent combination of background/course work in costume and theater arts.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to operate industrial and domestic sewing machines, surger and overlock, dye vat and craft tools, steam and hi-boil irons.
  • Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in theater or related field.
Equipment Utilized
  • Industrial and domestic sewing machines; industrial and domestic surger and overlock; industrial and domestic dye vat and craft tools; industrial and domestic steam and hi-boil irons.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Working in fast paced environment and interacting with other team members and students.
  • Must be able to carry and lift up to 30 lbs.
